Luke Dlabal Obituary

Dr. Luke Jacob Dlabal Jr.

July 24, 1940 - April 15, 2025

Lee's Summit, Missouri - Dr. Luke Jacob Dlabal Jr., born on July 24, 1940, in Leavenworth, Kansas to Dr. Luke Jacob Dlabal Sr. and Dorothea Elizabeth (Gerckon) Dlabal, departed this world on April 15, 2025, in Independence, Missouri. He was a dedicated physician, a loving husband, and a cherished member of his community.

Dr. Dlabal's journey began after graduating from Rockhurst High School, where he established a foundation for his future academic endeavors. He went on to complete his undergraduate studies at Rockhurst University and ultimately earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Missouri - Columbia. His commitment to medicine led him to complete a rotating internship at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Dr. Dlabal also served honorably in the United States Navy, fulfilling a two-year active-duty tour with the Pacific Fleet, which he regarded as a significant chapter in his life.

Following his military service, Dr. Dlabal returned to civilian life for a four-year residency in Otolaryngology at the University of Missouri. In 1973, he achieved board certification from the American Board of Otolaryngology, marking the beginning of a long and esteemed career in medicine. He operated his own practice until his retirement in 2009, proudly serving the health needs of his patients throughout his distinguished career. Notably, he served as president of the Medical Staffs at both the Medical Center of Independence and Lee's Summit Hospital, and he was instrumental in bringing innovative surgical techniques to the area, becoming the first physician to perform conservation surgery of the larynx and offering endoscopic sinus surgery in Eastern Jackson County.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Dlabal was known for his studious, dedicated, and outgoing personality. He enjoyed being active-playing baseball as a child, which sometimes resulted in broken windows during solo practice sessions. In later years, he continued his passion for sports through golf and tennis. He was an avid hunter, often pursuing turkey, ducks, and geese, with many of his catches prepared by his beloved wife, Chrystal. He held season tickets to the Mizzou Football program, Kansas City Royals, and the Kansas City Symphony, reflecting his enthusiasm for local sports and culture. Traveling on cruises with Chrystal brought him great joy, creating lasting memories together.

Dr. Dlabal is survived by his wife, Chrystal Dlabal; son, Dr. Luke Jacob Dlabal III (Jess); sister, Kathy Rucker (Tom Sr.); and sister-in-law, Kathy Dlabal. He was predeceased by his father, Dr. Luke Jacob Dlabal Sr.; mother, Dorothea Elizabeth Dlabal; and brother, Dr. Tom Dlabal.

A visitation will be held on Friday, May 9, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life service beginning at 2:00 PM, both taking place at Speaks Suburban Chapel, located at 18020 East 39th St S, Independence, MO 64055. Contributions can be made in Dr. Dlabal's memory to ACG Hospice (1650 NE Grand, Lee's Summit, MO 64064) the Alzheimer's Association.

Dr. Luke Jacob Dlabal Jr.'s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched both personally and professionally. He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to medicine, his vibrant spirit, and the deep love he held for his family and friends.

Remembering a truly wonderful man who made a real difference in the lives of those who knew him, whether as family, friends or patients. We are blessed to have known him through the marriage of our daughter, Jess, to Luke III. We thank and praise God for his life.

Dr Dlabal was a great person and friend, I am very sorry to hear of his passing. IN 1986 he operated on me, and thanks to him I am still here at 90. Prayers to the family.
