Lula Mae McPhail-Thomas was born May 28, 1938, in Darlington County, South Carolina. She was the oldest of seven children born to the late Calperta McPhail-Williams. She was educated in the Darlington County public schools and attended Butler
High School. She met and fell in love with James Thomas, Jr., and they were married on November 7, 1960. This union was blessed with four children.
Mrs. Thomas was employed with Stingray Boat Company and Saleeby Center, and she retired from Morrell Nursing Center in 1999 after many years of service.
Lula Mae loved the Lord and was always ready and willing to serve in God's house. It was her for Christ that led her to join the church at an early age. Because she was raised by her grandmother, she didn't have much choice about going to church. Mt. Calvary Baptist was her church home and she enjoyed praising the Lord while singing in the choir and by serving on the Usher Board and the Kitchen Committee.
Lula was loving, kind, and had a great sense of humor. She loved to tease her friends, especially the choir members. Although she loved spending time with all of her family, the grandchildren were very special to her. There was nothing that she wouldn't do for them, from cooking to dancing and singing, travelling to see them play football or graduating from high school or college. While watching football games, if one of grandsons got tackled she would get really mad!
Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas, Jr.; her oldest daughter, Velvet Prescott, and her son, Willie James Thomas; and siblings, Gertha Cooks, Lawrence Williams, Sunny Williams, and Elizabeth Weathers.
