Luz Mangubat Gopez passed away in her sleep on Friday, June 16, 2023, in South San Francisco,CA at the age of 89 years. She is survived by her children, Anges (Bobby), Tomas (Jeanne), Marinella and Felisa (Dennis), grandchildren: Miguel, Matthew, Nicolo (Marisa), Natasha (Xavier), and Melissa, greatgranchildren: Isaiah and Giovanna.
Luz was born on January 26, 1934, in Zamboanga City, Philippines. She was the seventh of thirteen children born to Dioscoro Mangubat and Victoria Jacob.
Luz was an avid dancer, varsity swimmer, and piano player. She was quick to pick up languages and dialects from all over the Phillipines. She meet her husband Eduardo Gopez at the Ateneo de Zamboanga as he was one of her college professors. They settled in Makati, Philippines and immigrated to the United States in 1978. She lived in both Manila and San Francisco Bay Area, frequently traveling to both places. She was well traveled and named the Scandinavian countries as her favorite places to visit.
She was smart, a fastidious dresser, and considered a beauty. She was not touchy feely and was very direct in her criticism. She was also a beautiful soul, she showing compassion and kindness, specially to those who need it.
She was friend and confidant to many who sought hew counsel. Luz was a people person, emphasizing that we all need other people. While she was fun and fun loving, she gave sensible and oftern prescient advice. Her legacy is alive in all the people whose lives she uplifted by her wise counsel or by her help. She hosted a lot of friends and relatives in our home, when they needed it. There are a lot of people who used to work in her household or who crossed paths with her whose lives are so much better because she helped them along the away.
