Lydia Barbara Hughes Grimes, 85, passed way Monday, Oct. 6, 2025 at Jay Hospital in Jay, Fla., following a lengthy illness.
Lydia was of the Baptist faith and a member of Brewton First Baptist Church. She was a native of Dale County before moving to Brewton many years ago. During her life in Brewton, Lydia was renowned for her coverage of historical events, people and places around the Brewton area and throughout Escambia County as a Lifestyles reporter for The Brewton Standard. The position allowed Lydia to be honored with awards for her work from the Alabama Press Association. She authored two historical books containing photos and facts of the Brewton/Escambia County area. In her free time, she enjoyed making Christmas ornaments. Lydia deeply loved her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Grimes; her son, Michael Grimes; a granddaughter, Natalie Danielle Grimes McCall; and her parents, Houston and Hettie Snell Hughes.

She is survived by a brother, Sterling (Shirley) Hughes; grandchildren Hillary Rose, Brewer Grimes and Christian Grimes; and five great-grandchildren; and a special friend and caregiver, Jennifer Howard Lazzaro.

Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.

Graveside services will follow at 11 a.m. at Union Cemetery with Bro. Adam Robinson officiating.
Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
