Lyman Demaray Obituary
Published by Legacy on Aug. 20, 2025.
Lyman Demaray, 84, passed away peacefully at home on July 24th after a brief but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on October 26, 1940, in Mankato, Minnesota, to George and Elizabeth Demaray, Lyman carried with him the values of hard work, humility, and kindness throughout his life. After graduating from Mankato State, he moved to Minneapolis. In 1963, he enlisted in the Army National Guard, serving until 1969. That same year, he began his career at IDS, American Express, and IBM, until his retirement at age 58. It was in Minneapolis that Lyman met the love of his life, Judi. The two were married in 1967 and built their life together in Bloomington, where they raised their two children and became deeply involved in the community. Lyman dedicated his time and energy to causes and organizations close to his heart, including the YMCA, Project Success, and the Born Again Jocks (BAJs). For over 40 years, he faithfully served as treasurer at Hillcrest United Methodist Church, a role he carried out with care and integrity. A lifelong Minnesota sports fan, Lyman had a special passion for the Golden Gophers and always found the bright side of every season. He loved playing sports as much as he loved watching them-golfing, backyard baseball and shooting hoops with his grandson Evan, and playing softball until the age of 80. Family vacations often revolved around fast-pitch softball tournaments, and Lyman was always in the heart of the action-coaching third base on Kelly's softball teams, supporting Mark's DJ business, and proudly cheering at Evan's many Shakopee Sabers games. More than anything, Lyman cherished time spent with his family. Whether traveling, gathering around the dinner table, or simply sitting in the bleachers at a game, he was present - steady, loving, and endlessly supportive. Lyman's life was defined not by titles or accolades, but by the relationships he nurtured, the example he set, and the joy he brought to those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. Lyman is survived by his wife of 58 years, Judi; daughter Kelly (Patrick) Sampson; son Mark (Jennifer); and grandson Evan. He is also survived by his sisters Georgia (Gene) Uhlenhopp and Kandi Demaray; and many beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews. A memorial service to celebrate Lyman's life will be held on Saturday, August 23rd at Hillcrest United Methodist Church, 9100 Russell Ave S, Bloomington MN 55431. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m., with the service beginning at 11:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon. To honor Lyman's devotion to Minnesota sports, the family encourages attendees to wear Maroon & Gold or other Minnesota team colors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lyman's memory to the YMCA of the North or Hillcrest United Methodist Church.
