Lyman Harold Howe III, 87, of Signal Mountain, peacefully passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at Solomons House in Red Bank, TN

Dr. Howe was known for his keen intellect and his love of strategy games, particularly bridge and chess, which he enjoyed throughout his life. He devoted many years to the field of chemistry and to public service through his professional career. "Grandpa Doc", as he was affectionately known to his grandchildren and their friends, will be remembered for always being there to help with the "hard homework" as well always willing to play with "Chemistry sets".

Born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, he received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Duke University, a master's degree in analytical chemistry from Emory University and his doctorate in inorganic chemistry from the University of Tennessee. Following his education, he began a long and dedicated career with the Tennessee Valley Authority, where he worked from 1966 until his retirement in 1997, primarily on water quality analysis. He was the grandson of "moving pictures" producer Lyman Howe, who in the 1900s was one of the first motion picture entrepreneurs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Esther Howe and Lyman Harold Howe Jr.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary Howe; his daughter, Jennifer Agan (John); and his cherished grandchildren: James Agan (Caroline), Joseph Agan, Julia Agan Cournoyer (Seth), and Jessica Agan.

The family wishes to thank the amazing staff at Solomon's House, and all the hospice nurses that provided outstanding loving care to Lyman and support to the family.
