Lyndal Virginia Hunt Varnell, "Meems," 91, of Mesquite, Texas, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025. Born on April 2, 1934, in White County, Arkansas, she lived a long and vibrant life filled with love, creativity, and deep faith.
Lyndal was the daughter of Lynn and Bessie Hunt of Arkansas and grew up with her beloved sister, Nina Lou Hunt Keith, of Kokomo, Indiana, all three of whom have preceded her in death.
Lyndal was also preceded in death by her favorite and only nephew, Robert Lynn Keith (Lindy).
Lyndal cherished the loving memories of two children who preceded her in death, Steve Pickens and Melinda Pickens.
Though she mourned the loss of granddaughter, Melissa Hunt Lea, and great-grandson, Bohdan Chase Walker, during her lifetime, she held their memories close to her heart.
She carried the values instilled in her during her early years throughout her life-kindness, resilience, and an unwavering devotion to family and faith.
A lifelong Christian and devoted member of the Church of Christ, Lyndal's spirituality was the cornerstone of her life. Her faith guided her actions and inspired those around her. She found joy in Bible study and lived each day with purpose and grace.
Lyndal was preceded in death by Jerry Gay Pickens, her first husband and father of her five children.
Lyndal married Donald Ray Varnell, with whom she shared many cherished years before his passing. They shared a large and loving family that was the center of Lyndal's world. She was a devoted mother to Gay Gugino, (husband Ralph); Steve Pickens, (wife Nita); Scotty Pickens; Melinda Pickens; Leica Turner, (husband Gary).
Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Angie Varnell, Rheya Smith, Lynn Varnell, Melissa Lea, Jimmy Moler, Virginia Houchin, Jennifer Clark, Joshua Pickens, Chrissie Rivers, Tommy Dickson, Jake Dickson, Taylor Dickson, Chad Chandler, and Allie Bautista. She was also blessed with 19 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
Lyndal's warmth extended beyond family-she had a gift for making friends easily wherever she went. Her personality sparkled with humor, wit, intelligence, and generosity. She was known for being loving and selfless while also being determined and headstrong when it mattered most.
Creative at heart, Lyndal expressed herself through crafts such as origami and poetry and painting. Her artistic spirit shone in everything she touched-from gardening to writing-and she took pride in sharing these passions with others. A fierce Scrabble champion with a sharp mind for words and strategy, she brought fun into every gathering.
She loved cruising the open seas as much as camping under the stars or relaxing on the beach-always surrounded by those she loved most. Reading brought her peace; family brought her joy; faith gave her strength.
Her passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew her-but also a lasting legacy of love that will continue to inspire generations to come.
May Meems' memory be a blessing to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
