Mabel Maurette "Chick" Hunter

Mabel Maurette "Chick" Hunter, a longtime resident of Oradell, passed away on February 7, 2026, at the age of 96. She was born on October 17, 1929, to Ray and Elva Boynton of Tenafly, New Jersey. Chick was a graduate of Tenafly High School and went on to attend Bucknell University, where she met Robert D. Hunter (d. 2004). Together, they shared 55 years of marriage.

After raising her children, Chick pursued a career as a Registered Nurse, graduating from Bergen Community College in 1977. She was employed at Pascack Valley Hospital, where she dedicated herself to caring for others.

Chick lived a full and active life. As a child, she spent her summers in Maine and maintained a lifelong bond with her extended family there. Her family instilled in her a deep love of nature, which she later shared with her own children and grandchildren. She adored animals, and they seemed to trust her instinctively-a reflection of her gentle and attentive spirit. In her later years, she filled her days with birdwatching, golf, and bridge.

Chick and Bob traveled the world together and spent many winters at Jonathan's Landing in Jupiter, Florida, where they enjoyed golf, bridge, and a rich social life with dear friends.

Chick was a devoted mother to three daughters, Kerry Huntington, Leanne Scharf, and Alayne "Lanie" Fessler, who were her pride and joy. Her life was further enriched by her expanding family. She was deeply admired by her sons-in-law, Shep Huntington (d. 2011), Tom Scharf, and Bob Fessler. She was the proud "Meme" to nine grandchildren: Kelly Vento (Dave), Tim Huntington, Todd Schmidt (Sara), Andrew Schmidt (Krystal), David Schmidt (Dayra), Janelle Chamberlin (Steve), Dan Fessler (Taylor), Matthew Fessler (Brittany), and Neal Fessler (Chris), as well as 14 great-grandchildren.

Those who knew and loved Chick find comfort in knowing that her legacy lives on through the memories she created, the lessons she taught, and the love she shared. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A celebration of life will take place on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at Volk Leber Funeral Home in Oradell, NJ. Visitation 10:00-11:30 am; service at 11:30 am.
