Mabel Lee Johnson was born on February 22, 1936, to the late Joseph and Fannie Sims of Selma Arkansas. She spent most of her life in Flint Michigan before moving to Columbus Ohio in 2001. She carried throughout her life the strength, grace, and warmth of her Southern roots.
Mabel was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend-known for her kindness, resilience, and unwavering devotion to her family. She was also an artist in the kitchen, where she poured her love into every meal. Her legendary scrambled eggs, pound cake, German chocolate cake, peach cobbler, spaghetti and every aspect of down-home soul food brought comfort and joy to all who gathered at her table.
She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Preston Johnson; her children, Wanda Woodie (Clinton), Fred Johnson (Jeryll), and Bruce Johnson (Soniqua). Three sisters, Ruth Nunn, Ruby Williams, and Shirley Cates. One brother, John Sims (Verna). She was cherished by six grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Herman Johnson (Toni) along with five brothers and two sisters.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025,11:30am, at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Columbus Ohio, where family and friends will gather to celebrate her life and the legacy she leaves behind.
Mabel Lee Johnson will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the blessing of knowing her-and by all who were ever nourished by her food and her love. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Mabel Lee Johnson (Sims), please visit our Tree Store.
