Mae Baker Obituary

Mae J. Baker
February 12, 1933 - February 23, 2022
Elk Grove, California - Mae Baker, was born on February 12, 1933 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at the age of 89, in Elk Grove, CA, due to complications from Dementia.
She was raised by her Mother Livell Day Jones ("Honey"), and her extended family in both New Orleans and in Hattiesburg Mississippi. She moved to California and attended San Francisco State College. Mae met and married James Baker, her husband of 44 years, who predeceased her. Together they raised four children in San Rafael, California. Mae worked as a teacher's assistant at the Bahia Vista Elementary School, and was a celebrated volunteer at the Bargain Box Sunny Hills Charity Store.
Mae later retired in the Sacramento area where she participated in the Charities of American Cancer Society Discovery Shop, and was active with her local Red Hat Society. Mae cultivated many good friends, sharing casino trips, and many social outings with her Pokeno card playing group.
Mae is survived by her children, Joan Baker (Rudy Gaskins) of New York City, Kevin Baker (Maya Baker) of San Francisco, Michael Baker (Kelli Baker) of Elk Grove, California, and Stanley Baker of San Rafael, California. Mae is also survived by her four grandchildren, Ryan and Sean Baker of Elk Grove, Calif., and Solange and Rhone Baker of San Francisco. Numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews also feel her loss. Mae will be greatly missed by all of her loved ones.
Mae's family would also like to express their highest gratitude to her home away from home, The Meadows Senior Living, and most especially, the staff within "the Atrium", the Memory Care Staff, who loved Mae, treating her with dignity, respect, and became a member of Mae's extended family.
A private service will be held by her family on Wednesday, March 2, 2022.

I will miss you Mae Baker (mom)! So happy to have had you and dad as my parents, and I would not have traded you all for anybody. I am also fortunate that I get to see you mom every time that I look in the mirror; when I squint a certain way, I can shape my eyes to look just like yours (as I can contort my eyes differently to shape my eyes like dad´s eyes as well for that matter). So I get to look you in the eye every morning, or every time I check the rear view mirror while driving, I´ll remember to smile and say "hello" to you and dad. You will always be traveling with me that way. I am very lucky for all I have, thanks to you and dad!

Hello Baker Family,
I wanted to send my condolences on behalf of Nazarine Rosen and my family on the passing of Mae. I have vivid memories of your mother, father and the three of you as very young children. I was probably closer to Joan in age. I just found out about her passing this afternoon and am sorry I could not come to share my support in person. I can share contact information privately. I wish all of your families support and peace.
