Mae Mitchell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anderson Funeral Home and Crematory on Jan. 16, 2026.
Our beloved Mae Marjorie Mitchell passed peacefully into her Forever Home on January 15, 2026, while residing at Canterfield of Bluffton, surrounded by loved ones.

She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and friend to many and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mae was born on December 15, 1934 in Staten Island, New York to the late Harold and Ann Martin. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Morton Mitchell and stepson Robert Mitchell.

She is survived by her children Debbie Rodgers, Rick (Monica) Lagno, Bill (Louise) Lagno, Tom (Jennifer Vitale) Lagno, Bonnie (Steve Rikard) Marsh and stepchildren Steven (Nancy) Mitchell. She was a loving grandmother to fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Mae was raised in Staten Island, New York and later raised her family in Montvale, New Jersey. She eventually settled in Port Royal, South Carolina, where she built a life and community she cherished. She worked as an executive secretary at Federal Paper Board and was deeply involved in her church, St. Helena Anglican Church of Beaufort, SC. Her faith was central to her life and she joyfully participated in Bible studies, volunteered in the church bookstore and clothing ministry, and served in many other outreach roles. She also volunteered at St. Franciscan Center and Treasure House.

Mae was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Tea With God and the Red Hat Sorority. She loved playing mahjong, doing puzzles and took great pride in the home she designed in Port Royal. She was actively involved in her community and formed many dear friendships over the years.

Above all, Mae's family and friends were the greatest joy of her life.

A celebration of Mae's life will be held at a funeral service at St. Helena Anglican Church in Beaufort, South Carolina on Friday, January 30, 2026, beginning at 10:30 AM with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.

Please no flowers. In lieu of flowers please make donation to St Helena Anglican Church, PO Box 1043; Beaufort, SC. 29901, or Crescent Hospice, 10 Buckingham Plantation Drive, Bluffton, SC. 29910.
