Malcolm Hugh Strong passed away surrounded by love, leaving behind a family who meant everything to him and a lifetime of stories that will be told with smile and laughter for years to come.
Malcolm is lovingly survived by his wife, Gillian; his daughter Heidi; and his stepchildren Hailey, Kimberley, Meaghan, Alex, and Luc, along with their families. He was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren, who truly were the light of his life. Nothing brought Malcolm more joy—or kept him happier—than time spent with his grandchildren. Their laughter, milestones, and everyday moments meant the world to him.
He was predeceased by his beloved son, Wade Strong, whom he carried in his heart always.
Malcom arrived in Cochrane in 1996 with little more than a truck and a lawnmower, laying the foundation for what would become the original MD Landscaping. From those humble beginnings grew Branched Out Nursery, and eventually the Cochrane Desert Industrial Park—each an integral part of Cochrane’s growth and a lasting reflection of Malcom’s vision, determination, and deep commitment to the community
Malcolm had a deep love for water and everything connected to it. Whether it was oceans, lakes, rivers, or simply being near the water’s edge, it brought him peace and joy. That same love for exploration carried him near and far—travelling to places like Central America and Arizona, or just as happily heading out for a drive around just about anywhere to see who had the best garage sale. Some of his favourite adventures were the simplest ones: wandering into the back lot of a construction site, his loyal buddy Baxter at his side, just taking it all in.
Malcolm, a teacher and mentor to many, was known for his sense of humour, his curiosity, and his appreciation for life’s small pleasures while making his expectations be known (!). If you knew him and feel moved to make a toast in his honour, he would insist you do it his way—tip that glass of KFC gravy and bottoms up. It’s a fitting tribute to a unique man who never took himself too seriously and found joy in the unexpected.
Malcolm will be remembered for his love of family, his adventurous spirit, his steadfast way and how he came through for the people he cared about. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
A Celebration of Life in Malcolm’s honour will be held in July 2026, details to follow.
