MALCOLM WISEMAN Obituary
Malcolm Thomas Wiseman, Sr., the eldest son of Luster Terry Wiseman and Patricia Thomas-Beard was born on December 15, 1968, in
Indianapolis, IN. Like his brothers after him, Malcolm, Sr.'s name was derived eponymously from (which here, means, "named after") a civil rights activist, in his case, Malcolm X. This naming convention may well have been the catalyst for his love of reading, history, and learning, in general.
Malcolm, Sr. attained his primary and lower secondary education at Indianapolis Public Schools. He matriculated Mary Nicholson School 70, and Merle Sidener 59 Junior High School where he discovered an affinity for track and field, earning the nickname, "Hurdles." At Bishop Chatard High School, Malcolm, Sr. was a fierce competitor in multiple sports, including football, and track and field. He became one of the finest hurdlers in the State of Indiana and still holds several meet records throughout the city of Indianapolis, including the 110m hurdles record at his home stadium. During the summer of 1984, Malcolm, Sr.'s joy for running track led him to train with the Wilma Rudolph Foundation's community-based youth athletic program, organized by the self-titled 1960 Olympic gold medalist. It was during these pivotal years, that Malcolm, Sr. discovered an unquenchable thirst for biblical truths and the mysteries of the Gospel. Spurred on by his track coach, Carlos Brown, Malcolm, Sr. accepted Christ, was baptized at the Indianapolis Church of Christ, and developed a deeply personal relationship with the Lord.
Malcolm, Sr. went on to compete nationally in The Athletics Congress (TAC), now USA Track and Field (USATF). In 1986, through the International Sports Exchange, he traveled to Germany to compete, raising the money to fund the trip by hosting a carwash at Chatard High School. He left an indelible mark on Germany, prevailing in hurdles and a sprint relay. As a result of Malcolm, Sr.'s success as a high school hurdler, he was awarded a track and field scholarship to the University of Georgia, where he participated as a member of the "Bulldog" track team. While a student at UGA, he pledged the Zeta Pi chapter and became an "Ice Cold Brother" of his beloved Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., crossing the burning sands on May 25, 1989. His fraternity brothers of A A, including his biological brother Marcus, remained among his nearest and dearest friends.
In June 1992, Malcolm, Sr. fell in love with a beautiful and cheerful Bennett College "Belle," Monica Lynne Green. He had seen her in a video she produced for a summer intensive program for students interested in graduate school at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. He knew he had to meet her, so he enrolled. It should be noted here that this is Monica's version of the "How did you meet?" story. It should also be noted here that neither of them had intentions of ever attending graduate school at IUPUI. Malcolm, Sr. moved quickly and decisively, both on and off the track; an eight-month romance ensued and the two were wed February 13, 1993. Babies soon followed. Strengthening and completing their love were Michaela (1994); Mckenzie (1996); Malcolm, Jr. (1998); and Mason (2001), d. 2020. Malcolm, Sr. loved his family intensely. He was a deeply engaged husband and father. One of his favorite things to do for his family was to experiment in his test kitchen attempting to replicate some meal they had enjoyed at a restaurant or reproduce his cousin's family-famous carrot cake. There may have been nothing more important to him than the love of God and the love of his family. Well, and, also, books. During the whirlwind and demands of midnight-waking and diaper changing, before there was Audible, Malcolm, Sr., finding less time to read and meticulously outline the pages of his books with multi-colored pens, took to books on tape – yes on tape – playing them at triple speed. Apparently, he understood and absorbed the information, as he was often apt to spout random and obscure facts to any who dared debate him – even on vacation.
Fatherhood gave rise to one of Malcolm, Sr.'s treasured pastimes and afforded him a new title: coach. From elementary school through middle school, he trained all four children: his girls in soccer, and boys in football. He would go on to coach travel soccer at Indy Burn (later USAi) and high school soccer at Pike High School. He followed the careers of many of his former players, catching their collegiate games when he was able. Malcolm, Sr. was a beloved coach and will be missed on the sidelines by other coaches, officials, parents, and players alike. Two of his children made him a grandfather, or as he was affectionately known, "Baba" (father in many African languages, including Swahili, Zulu, and isiXhosa, better known as Wakandan). He had the pleasure of being on the sidelines with one of them.
Even with faith, family, and Futbol, Malcolm, Sr. found time to work. Since 2009, he was licensed in all 50 states as an insurance claims adjuster with The Hartford. He also did a few things for which he did not receive payment. For more than 25 years, Malcolm, Sr. was a committed volunteer for Indiana Black Expo's Summer Celebration, and most notably, the Circle City Classic parade where he managed logistics for university bands, including safety, overnight accommodations, food, and transportation. Additionally, Malcolm, Sr. was a Freemason. He was initiated and raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason at Meridian Lodge #33 PHA, Indianapolis. And after all those years of "chasing his children all around town," together with his wife Monica, and a group of "outstanding personalities," he enjoyed traveling to sunny beaches and windy cities.
On Friday, February 21, 2025, having acquired all the wisdom this world has to offer, since Malcolm, Sr. couldn't go home with Monica, he went home to be with the Lord, and reunited with his son, Mason Alexander Wiseman, in the Great Beyond. Malcolm, Sr. will live forevermore in the hearts of his wife, Monica Lynne Wiseman; daughters, Michaela Rae Wiseman of Dallas, TX, and Mckenzie Logan Wiseman; son, Malcolm Thomas Wiseman, Jr. (Cian) of Cincinnati, OH; granddaughter, Alanna Masie Wiseman of Cincinnati, OH; grandsons, Carson Eric Alexander Willis, and Zyire Amand Wiseman of Cincinnati, OH; mother, Patricia Thomas-Beard (Charles) of Port Charlotte, FL; father, Luster Terry Wiseman (Linda); sister, Leslie Wiseman; brothers, Marcus Wiseman (Shawn) of Potomac, MD, and Martin Thomas (Brandi); and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, fraternity brothers, student athletes, and cherished friends and loved ones.
