Marc Gemar Obituary

Mass of Christian Burial for Marc "Shark" Gemar, 61, of Omaha formerly of Mobridge will be at 10:30 AM Saturday, February 1, 2025 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mobridge. Inurnment will be at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery. Marc passed away Thursday, January 16, 2025 at Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha. Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.
Marc Douglas Gemar was born to Duane and Patricia (Blazer) Gemar on July 27,1963 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The family moved to Mobridge in 1965 when Duane got the job of managing the Mobridge Country Club. That is where Marc's love of the outdoors began, and where he honed his baseball swing hitting rocks with broken slats from the snow fences. It is also where local legend Pat Morrison gave him the nickname that so many people knew him by: Shark, which came from the hours little Marc would spend playing card games in the clubhouse. He graduated from Mobridge High School in 1982 and then went on to earn his bachelor's degree from the University of South Dakota. Marc loved to play baseball; in High School he played on Mobridge's Legion team which competed in the State Championship game. He played for four years in college and later participated in amateur baseball in Mobridge, Vermillion, and Dell Rapids. In 1989, his Dell Rapids team finished as runner up in the state amateur tournament.
Following graduation from college Marc worked as a manager at Chi Chi's restaurant in Sioux Falls. Marc was transferred by Chi Chi's to manage restaurants in St. Paul, Vancouver and Omaha. In February of 1993 Marc started working for Lozier Corp in Omaha. He worked there until his retirement in 2024.
Marc often traveled to Mobridge over the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas to spend time with his family and friends. He enjoyed playing video games, yard games, and board games while sharing laughter and conversation with his loved ones. Croquet and Mario Kart were among his favorite games. Later in life, he frequently visited Yellowstone National Park, taking in the geysers, mountains, and fresh air. Watching and discussing sports was another of Marc's passions; on fall weekends, he could be found cheering for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Pittsburgh Steelers.
On January 16, 2025, Marc passed away after a long battle with leiomyosarcoma, a rare smooth muscle cancer. He was preceded in death by his father, Duane Gemar; mother, Patricia Palmer; stepfather, Jim Palmer, and brother Eddie Gemar. He is survived by his fiancée, Kristen Day; brother Ron (Bonnie) Gemar, and half brothers Luke (Jenny) Gemar, Lance (Crystal) Gemar, and Lane (Ashley) Gemar; sister-in-law, Deanna Gemar; stepmom, LaVonne Gemar; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
