Marceline Duffill Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Strickland & Family Cremations & Funeral Services on Apr. 28, 2025.
Marceline Gray Duffill, known to all as Mikey, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the age of 93. Mikey was born Marceline Gray in Chicago, Illinois, to Edwin "Brownie" Gray and Ruth Fisher Gray.
Mikey grew up in Palo Alto, California, and later resided in Virginia Beach, Virginia, after many years in Morristown, New Jersey, where she spent most of her adult life raising her three children. Mikey graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1953 with a degree in Home Economics, she was a proud member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and continued her philanthropy and involvement in the Panhellenic community for decades after graduating.
Mikey began her career as a stewardess for United Airlines in 1953, where she had the joy of working alongside her father, Captain Brownie Gray, and her sister, Laurie Gray. She later worked as a substitute teacher at Morristown High School and eventually retired as an Executive Assistant to several Vice Presidents at AT&T.
In 1954, Mikey married John "Jack" Duffill, and together they raised their three children: Lani, Sheri, and Bill. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Morristown, New Jersey, where she found a deep sense of community, particularly through Circle 11. Mikey was also a longtime member of Springbrook Country Club, where she formed many lifelong friendships. Her hobbies included playing golf, bridge, and hosting many beloved "potluck Presbyterian dinners." She had a deep love for travel, gathering a wealth of knowledge and stories from around the world, and cherished trips into New York City to attend Broadway shows.
Mikey's life was rich with creativity, curiosity, and joy. She had a passion for flower arranging, especially Japanese Ikebana, and loved expressing herself through watercolor painting. She delighted in uncovering unique bits of history and was especially proud of tracing her family's ancestry and heritage. Her home was filled with beloved collections, including her cherished Byers' Choice Christmas carolers - each one a little reflection of her love for tradition and storytelling.
Mikey's spirit was marked by her extraordinary adaptability and easygoing nature. She approached every chapter of her life with grace and an open heart, always going with the flow and finding goodness wherever she could. Her voice was a source of comfort, her wit could light up a room, and her honesty was unfailing. She had a rare and beautiful gift for making everyone around her feel important and loved, always offering encouragement and sincere gratitude. She never let a kindness go unnoticed, often reminding people how much they meant to her.
Among her keepsakes was a quote that captured how she hoped to be remembered:
"Those we love don't go away; they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near. Still loved, still missed, and very dear."
Mikey lived these words every day of her life. Though unseen, her warmth, her wisdom, and her love will forever walk beside all who were lucky enough to know her.
Mikey is survived by her daughter, Sheri Mellides, and her husband, Norman, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; her daughter-in-law, Peggy Duffill, of Maywood, New Jersey; and six grandchildren: Phillip "P.J." Mango and his wife, Jennifer; Melissa Mango; Marci Mango of Dallas, Texas; Clifford (C.J.) Mellides and his wife, Sydney, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Luke and Leah Duffill of Maywood, New Jersey. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Reilly Mango of New York, New York; Emma and Halle Mango of Dallas, Texas; and Stella Mellides of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Lani Mango, and son-in-law, Mike Mango, as well as her son, Bill Duffill.
A celebration of Mikey's life will be held at a later date at the Presbyterian Church of Morristown, New Jersey. Her final resting place will be in the Memorial Garden at the church, a peaceful place that, like Mikey herself, holds generations of love, faith, and community.
