Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wing Mortuary - Lehi on Mar. 18, 2025.
Our Smiley Riley Ogden, beloved son, brother, grandson, cousin and friend, valiantly won his battle with Type 1 Spinal Muscular Atrophy on March 15, 2025, in
Lehi, Utah, at the age of 17.
He chose this day as he went without illness or complications surrounded by all his loving family.
Riley was born on December 19, 2007, in Ogden, Utah. He made his presence known to a huge blizzard that day.
After a few months of age, it was obvious Riley was not meeting his milestones and the SMA diagnosis was made. Riley piloted many studies on the disease so that there will never be another Type 1 SMA child with his severe side effects. He is a hero to many SMA families.
Riley lived in a body with a disease that stole his muscles from moving, except in his face where we were all blessed with his unforgettable smile.
He loved a good joke, grinning with his unique belly laugh. He loved for you to place a ball in his lap and work so hard using his belly laugh and the tips of his fingers getting the ball to fall and hit the floor. With the biggest smile you would say "Riley did you throw that ball on the floor?" He was so proud of himself.
He loved hearing the song Happy Birthday, 80's Rock, sentimental Disney movies and songs. He loved books and movies, Harry Potter, Star Wars and anything with astronomy. And yes, he was an AVID Jazz basketball fan!
Whether it was treatments, surgeries, illnesses, long stays in the hospital, riding in a boat, riding a roller coaster, playing T-ball, fishing, camping, being in a pool, going on a plane to Disneyworld, getting baptized, passing the sacrament, he endured it all with joy, with little complaint and with heart and determination. His parents made sure he had multiple experiences as he was the utmost thrill seeker.
Riley's proudest moment came when his little brother was born. Riley loved Asher and Asher had an unconditional love for Riley. Asher learned from an early age how to care for his brother. He was an "expert" caregiver, and many times set the nurses and doctors straight.
Riley and his parents were blessed with so many wonderful people that took care of him and his needs for the past 17 years.
They wanted to thank, from the bottom of their hearts, all his private duty nurses, all those at the Horizon School, the Kauri Sue Hamilton School and the school nurses from Hand 2 Heart Medical staffing. And of course, all the care givers at PCH in SLC and Lehi.
Special thanks to Dr. Kathy Swobota, Dr. Jennifer Brinton, Dr. Natalie Darro and Dr. Peter Lindgren and Wendy Lloyd LCSW.
For the past year Riley has resided at Neuro Restorative. Their love and admiration toward Riely were above and beyond amazing. He had a crush on all the girl nurses and therapists as he would not take his eyes off them with a big smile on his face.
Riley is survived by his parents, Marc Randall Ogden and Rebecah Bryant Ogden and brother Asher Ogden, age 10.
Also survived by his grandparents, Greg and Jenny Hall, Mark and Michele Ogden, Mark and Kathy Bryant and great grandmother Jackie Greenberg. And many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Preceded in death by his great grandparents Dolph and Joyce Spencer and Dolores Fitzgerald.
