Margaret Astfalk Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chas. Verheyden, Inc. Funeral Home & Cremation Service - Grosse Pointe on Oct. 4, 2022.
ASTFALK, Margaret Claire (nee Simpson), beloved by a large and extended family, and a longtime resident of Grosse Pointe Park, passed away at her daughter's home in Ortonville, MI on October 1, 2022.
Margaret, or Peggy as she was known to many, was born April 15, 1930, on the family farm in Saranac, MI. Her parents were Harold and Margaret (nee Troy) Simpson, Last year, Peggy happily attended that same farm's a centennial celebration. - with her brother Darold (Anne) Simpson and his family still operating the farm. Peggy attended school in Saranac and graduated from St. Mary's nursing school in Grand Rapids, MI. Upon graduation from nursing school, she went seeking adventure, and moved to California with four friends. There, she met her future husband, Edward G. Astfalk.
Peggy and Ed eventually settled in Grosse Pointe and raised a family of nine children: Cathy (Mike) Simon, Ed, Dan, Anne Carpenter, Tim (Donna), Martin, John, Chris (Jennifer), and Peter. Peggy was also Grandmother to Terry Roberts, CJ Astfalk, Mary Astfalk, Ronald Carpenter, Courtney Pokorney, Jacob Astfalk, Emily Astfalk, John Paul Astfalk, Eveline Astfalk, Maeve Astfalk, Molly Astfalk, Erin Astfalk and Jessica Gregory. And Peggy was Great Grandma to Madelin Roberts, Josephine Roberts, Grant Roberts, Grace Roberts, Charlotte Pokorney, Amelia Pokorney,, June Astfalk, Johan Astfalk, Reese Gregory, and Knox Gregory. Family was most important to Peggy and she provided us all with so many treasured memories. Picnics at the Park and cross country road trips among our most treasured.
Peggy also provided care and service to the larger community through her decades of work as a registered nurse. Even after retiring from her employment at Bon Secours (Beaumont Grosse Pointe) hospital, Peggy continued volunteer work there, and she enjoyed the many friends she made at the hospital Peggy lifted up many lives through her nursing and volunteer work.
Peggy's Catholic faith was a central pillar of her life. She was a member of St. Clare of Montefalco for 60 years. All of her children attended St. Clare School. The fellowship she found at St. Clare nourished and sustained her throughout her life.
Visitation will be Wednesday October 5th 4:00 - 8:00 PM, at Chas. Verheyden Inc., 16300 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe. Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM, instate 10:30 AM, Thursday October 6th at St. Clare of Montefalco Catholic Church, 1401 Whittier, Grosse Pointe. Internment at Saranac Cemetery in Saranac, MI. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donation be made to St. Clare of Montefalco School at www.stclareschool.net. Share a memory at www.verheyden.org.

I absolutely loved Peggy! From camping with her family to the many conversations we had when she would call to check on my mom... to seeing her at the hospital; i always felt better after speaking with her. She made this world a better place! She, Ed and all their wonderful friends are timeless treasures.
Blessings to her family!

While we did not have a chance to meet Peggy (or Ed) in person, we can say she raised a wonderful son who is a friend to many. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family for their loss.
