Margaret "Peggy" Carmichael
Margaret "Peggy" Carmichael passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family.
Peggy was born on February 25, 1937, in
Augusta, Maine, the daughter of Elliott Hanson and Magarey Brown Hanson. She grew up in Bath, Maine where she graduated from Morse High School in 1955. She was active in school and well known for her voice, earning recognition at Morse High School for "Nicest Voice."
Peggy married the love of her life, Bob Carmichael, and together they shared more than sixty-eight wonderful years of marriage until Bob's passing two years ago. Their marriage was a true partnership built on love, devotion, and family. Peggy and Bob remained close to their Bath roots, attending reunions and gathering with lifelong friends.
Peggy and Bob settled in Bucksport, where she devoted herself to raising their five children while Bob taught school and coached. Peggy was the consummate supportive wife and mother, always behind the scenes making things run smoothly. She was deeply involved in school activities and booster clubs, often hosting events and supporting the community in countless ways.
While raising their family, Peggy returned to work, first part-time and eventually full-time, working for the school department in Bucksport and later in Orrington where she served as a secretary for the Superintendent of Schools and was an active union member. Peggy took considerable pride in her work and absolutely loved her job, especially the problem-solving and the people she worked with. Along with her close colleague and dear friend Candace Dunbar, Peggy helped establish a professional development organization, Educational Central Office Staff (ECOS), creating meaningful educational and conference opportunities for professionals serving in superintendent administrative roles across Maine. She retired in June of 2003.
In retirement, Peggy and Bob enjoyed traveling, especially to Florida, where they cherished years of memories with friends. She treasured time spent with longtime friends from Bucksport and new friends at Sandpoint Daytona Beach Shores. Peggy loved slow mornings, savoring her coffee or tea while reading the newspaper. She deeply loved her large extended family of Hansons and Carmichaels and took immense joy in decades of Hanson Yarmouth Clan Festival reunions, as well as attending Scottish Games throughout the years with the Carmichael Clan.
More than anything else, Peggy treasured her family. She is survived by her children: Jerriann Pollard; Rob Carmichael Jr.; Jon Carmichael; Jeff Carmichael and his wife Dorreen; and Jenna Payea and her husband Brian; her three loving sisters, Pamelia Barry, Cynthia Loomis, and Deborah Roux; and her much loved nieces and nephews. Peggy was a proud grandmother to twelve grandchildren and a loving great grandmother to nineteen great grandchildren, with her 20th great grandchild expected in July. She and Bob loved following their grandchildren's lives and activities, attending sporting events and celebrations whenever possible - always present, always cheering.
Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Bob Carmichael; her parents; and her brothers, Graeme Hanson and James Hanson.
Peggy will be remembered for her warmth, dedication to family, strong work ethic, and the quiet strength with which she lived her life. She leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and cherished memories that will live on in all who knew her.
The family would like to thank St. Joseph's Hospice Care givers for their warm, professional, and empathetic care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Joseph Healthcare Foundation, PO Box 1638, Bangor, ME 04402-1638.
