Margaret Diane Corfield Hughes “Lady M”

7 August 1926 – 13 September 2025

Margaret Diane Corfield Hughes, affectionately known to many as “Lady M,” passed away peacefully on September 13, 2025, in Bluffton, South Carolina, at the age of 79. Born on August 7, 1946, in Wolverhampton, England, Margaret lived a life that touched countless hearts across the globe with her kindness, compassion, and boundless zest for life.

To those who knew her best—whether as Margaret, Lady M, Aunt Mags, or Nana—she was a shining example of humanity at its finest. Her warmth and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel seen and loved, and her presence brought joy wherever she went.

Margaret’s adventurous spirit was evident in every chapter of her life. She found joy in long-distance walking and hiking through nature’s beauty, kayaking along peaceful waters, and savoring music that stirred the soul. She also cherished the simple pleasures, especially happy hours with friends and family—where laughter flowed as freely as the conversation.

Her spiritual path was guided by teachings from *A Course in Miracles* and meditation practices that grounded her in peace and purpose. These beliefs were not just part of her routine, they were woven into how she lived each day: with mindfulness, grace, and love.

Family was everything to Margaret. She is lovingly remembered by her son Adrian Christopher Hughes; his wife Kara Veina; and her beloved grandchildren Madelyn England and Colton Corfield. To Maddie and Colton, she was Nana—their favorite babysitter who lit up with joy whenever they were near. Whether kicking their parents out for some adult time or planning spontaneous adventures with the kids, Margaret treasured every moment spent with them. She adored her brothers and sisters- Michael, David, Sue and Jill and her beloved nieces and nephews; all residing in England. She fiercely loved her friends, having the capacity to form deep, lasting relationships with each one of them. They all became her family.

She was predeceased by her mother, father, and younger brother, Stephen and her dear friends Norma and Mary—losses that shaped but never dimmed her resilient spirit.

The past year brought profound challenges as Margaret faced the cruel progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Watching such a vibrant soul slowly fade was heartbreaking for those closest to her. The disease took its toll not only on Margaret but also on those who stood by her side throughout the journey. Yet even in decline, the essence of who she was—a woman full of light and love—remained deeply felt.

We would like to thank Bloom Memory Care (May River Landing) of Bluffton and Hospice of the Lowcountry for the care provided in the last critical months as well as Margaret’s tribe of friends. We are eternally grateful.

In honor of Margaret’s memory and in hopes of sparing others from similar pain, donations are encouraged to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Her family invites all who walked beside Margaret during her lifetime to continue walking for her now—in spirit or in person. We invite you to join our team “The Birds” at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Old Town Bluffton on Saturday, 25 October 2025 at 9:00 AM.

Margaret Diane Corfield Hughes lived a life filled with adventure, love, laughter—and above all—a deep connection to others. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her and continue to inspire acts of kindness around the world. A Celebration of Life will be held on 2 November 2025, from 01:00 PM to 03:00 PM at Oyster Factory Park 55 Wharf Street. All are welcome to join a memorial kayak paddle beforehand at 11:30am departing from the Oyster Factory boat landing.
