Margaret Johnson was born in Lincolnton, Georgia, on July 8, 1931, she moved to Passaic, New Jersey in 1935 with her mother Annie Elam and her two sisters. Margaret, though affectionately known as Aunt Boonie, lived a life filled with vibrancy, independence, and an unwavering devotion to her faith. She often stated that her purpose in this life was "to take care of my family," a calling she diligently fulfilled all her days.
Margaret worked as a sales cashier for several years at Macy's Department Store in Paramus Mall. She was married to Otis Johnson, a veteran who preceded her in death in 1976.
Margaret lived in Passaic for the remainder of her life and was a long-time member of the Union Baptist Church. She worshiped faithfully under the pastorships of Reverend T.H. Alexander and later Reverend Ronald W. Johnson. She served diligently as a dedicated member of the Usher Board, greeting members and visitors on Sunday morning. Her faith was a cornerstone of her existence, guiding her through life's journey.
An excellent cook, Margaret was known for her baked macaroni and cheese and her delicious cream cheese pound cakes, which brought joy to countless family dinners. She passionately nurtured family traditions, most notably hosting the cherished annual Christmas Breakfasts for over 40 years, creating lasting memories for her loved ones. Living on her own and still owning and driving a car, she remained fiercely independent and engaged in life well up to her ninety-fourth year, inspiring those around her with her unwavering spirit and zest for life.
Though she had no children of her own, Margaret cherished her role as a beloved aunt, forming an especially close bond with her nieces; Marcia Elam- Moore, Brenda A Elam, Dawn Franklin and Saleema Hogges. They were her unwavering source of support and love, enriching her life in countless ways. She will be remembered for her selfless nature, her culinary gifts, and the countless ways she cared for her family.
She is reunited in eternal peace with her loving brothers and sisters; Beulah Kate Johnson, Eleanor Bennett, Thomas Elam, Frank Elam, and her beloved baby sister; Audrey Elam.
Margaret, 94, of Passaic, NJ passed away peacefully on Monday, August 4, 2025, at Hackensack University Medical Center, surrounded by the love of her devoted nieces.
Margaret leaves to cherish wonderful memories her sister; Annie Elam of New Milford, NJ, nieces and nephews; Michelle Johnson, Troy Johnson, Lamont Bennett, Vincent Bennett, Trent Bennett, Desmond Elam, Cheryl Singletary, Trent Elam, Michael Elam, Susan Cooper, Sterling Rozier, Frank Elam, Jr., Aaron Elam, Eric Elam and Gary Elam as well as numerous grandnieces, grandnephews, and a host of very cherished friends and neighbors.
