Margaret Rohan Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Macken Mortuary, Inc. - Rockville Centre on Oct. 9, 2025.
Margaret Rohan came into this world as Margaret Hurley in 1934. She was Peggy to her friends, of which there were many, Mom to her children, of which there were 9, Nanny to her grandchildren, of which there were 19 and, as of this year, Great Grandma to 2.
Growing up in Astoria, Queens, she was the only child of Irish-born John and Helen (née Tobin) Hurley. Graduating from St. Vincent Ferrer High School in 1952, she immediately began her career as a legal secretary, working for the Port Authority of New York. On a Sunday afternoon trip to Gaelic Park, her life would change forever when she met Galway-born James Rohan, recently returned from his service in Korea. They were married in 1955
.
They set up their first home in Middle Village, Queens, and there began their family. As their numbers grew, she showed a seemingly limitless energy in her new parish of Our Lady of Hope, balancing motherhood while actively working with the young adult outreach, teaching CCD, and serving as President of the Rosary Altar Society. When the household grew to 9 children they relocated to Forest Hills, Queens where they would spend the next 30 years as parishioners at Our Lady of Mercy. By this time, she was working for Davis, Polk & Wardwell and proudly putting all of her children through Catholic school. The title of grandmother was first bestowed upon her in 1989, a title she would eventually have 19 times over.
Retiring from her legal secretary career in 1998, she travelled to many destinations in Europe and Asia in addition to her multiple trips to Ireland. All the while, she enjoyed nearly 50 summers as a member of Sun & Surf Beach Club.
She was widowed one day shy of her 49th wedding anniversary in 2004, after which she relocated to Rockville Centre. She became an active member of St. Agnes Cathedral Parish where she quickly made friends, became involved in Parish Outreach and served as a Eucharistic Minister at the local nursing home.
She grew to love her new life in Rockville Centre, in no small part because it put her in close proximity to her many grandchildren and eventual great grandchildren.
She left this world on Tuesday October 7, 2025, concluding her life as she had lived it: surrounded by family. Her humor, vitality, and generosity will be forever missed by her children: Patricia (Jack O'Hagan), the late Eileen (d 1976), James, Margaret (the late Peter Finning), Nancy (Tigran Edindjiklian), Maura (James Bednar), Brian, Christina (Walter Camas), and Jeanne (David Kovalich) as well as her grandchildren; Ryan, Brendan (Megan Dotto), Eileen (Daniel Kilduff), Mairead, Kieran, and Tara O'Hagan; Daniel and Kevin Finning; Jamie and T.J. Edindjiklian (Marisa Iovino-fiancée); Deirdre (Kevin Gallant), Brianna, and Michael Bednar; Matthew, Erin, Allison, Brian, and Sean Camas; and Keira Kovalich, along with her great grandchildren Patrick Kilduff and James O'Hagan.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Agnes Parish Outreach.
