Margaret Jane Brothers Smotherman, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, went to be with the Lord on July 11, 2025, at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, TN. She was 65 years old.
She is survived by her loving husband, Donald Smotherman; her devoted son Nicholas Collier, and his wife Jessica; and her treasured grandsons Nathaniel Jackson Gray and Cason John Collier. She is also survived by her stepchildren Donald Smotherman JR and Jessica Smotherman and their families. She will be deeply missed by her sister Marti, and brother-in-law Joe Hill, niece Jenny Hill, nephew JJ Hill, great nieces and nephew Harper, Simon, and Evelyn Hill, and many more nephews, nieces, and cousins in Michigan and Alabama. She will also be greatly missed by her lifelong friends and countless others.
She was born on August 12, 1959, in Detroit, Michigan to Maragaret Lucille Brothers and Benjamin Mitchell Brothers. The youngest of 3 girls, Margaret was raised with deep family values and was always pouring love into those around her.
A lifelong homemaker, Margaret was the heart of her home- a place where everyone was welcome. Her warmth and kindness were matched only by her talent and creativity. She was an accomplished seamstress, and made many pieces of clothing, costumes, and quilts for her family over the years, each piece crafted with love and care. Margaret worked for several years at Lowe’s in Columbia, where she enjoyed serving her community and forming lifelong friendships with her co-workers.
She found pleasure and peace in the simple joys of life. She loved coffee, tending her chickens, and working in her beautiful flower gardens. She spent much of her time on the farm, which she shared with her husband, where the quiet rhythms of country life brought her great contentment.
Margaret had a lifelong love for animals and shared her home with many pets over the years - each one dearly loved and considered family. She leaves behind her beloved dogs, Dolly and Bella, who brought her constant companionship, joy, and comfort.
Her gentle spirit, quick wit and selfless heart shaped the lives of all who knew her. Whether sharing a warm meal, offering a handmade quilt, or caring for those around her - Margaret gave with her whole heart. Her legacy is one of unconditional love, creative beauty and quiet strength.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents Mitchell and Lucille Brothers, her mother-in-law, Esther Molton, and father-in-law Coy Smotherman.
The family will receive friends on Thursday July 17, 2025, from 4-7pm and again on Friday July 18, from 12-1PM at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, TN. A funeral service will follow at 1pm, officiated by Bro. Edd Luna, with internment at Spencer Hill Cemetery in Mt Pleasant TN.
Though she is no longer with us, Margaret's love will continue to bloom in the gardens she planted, live on in the warmth of her quilts, and echo in the laughter and memories shared by those who knew her best.
