William (Bill) Hollis Smotherman, age 79, passed away peacefully at home on September 11, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Born on September 5, 1946, in Rutherford County, Tennessee, he was the beloved son of the late Mary Ellen (Tudy) and William Elmore (Dink) Smotherman.

A lifelong resident of Middle Tennessee, Bill worked diligently for over 30 years at the Bridgestone Tire Plant in La Vergne, from which he retired in 2009. He was known for his strong work ethic, steady presence, and exceptional sense of humor. He loved to play the guitar and ride his Harley.

He served as a Marine in Vietnam, where he was wounded twice and awarded 2 purple hearts for his bravery.

Bill was always willing to lend a helping hand. Whether you needed help moving, fixing your car or whatever the occasion called for, he was the guy we all depended on. He lived his life with kindness, humility, and integrity.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Smotherman, his brother, Doug Smotherman, 2 children, Cindy Timmerman and Stephanie Smotherman, 3 grandchildren, Kristine Cook, Jake Watson and Sarah Beth Smotherman, 3 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many other cherished family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dink and Tudy Smotherman, siblings, Patsy Lokey, Clyde Smotherman and Tommy Smotherman.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, September 20, 2025 at Murfreesboro Funeral Home, located at 145 Innsbrooke Blvd., Murfreesboro TN 37128, with visitation from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m., followed by a service at 6:00 p.m.

You were the best Papaw. You took us in and did everything in your power to try to make us happy and forget the trauma. It takes a special kind of person to take in children that aren´t yours, but you did it; with a big ole smile. I´m so happy that we did get to reconnect a couple times over the years and I´m even happier I got to tell you how much I loved and appreciated you. To the family, I´m so sorry for your loss of this incredible human. Cindy and Stephanie-I love y´all and will hug you both soon.

Bill was always my favorite and loved by Clara´s side of the family. He would do anything for anyone. I remember when I was little he would drive to Maryville to pick me up and bring me back to Lavergne for the summer. He would take me fishing and to the ballpark on his bike or the old red pick up. Occasionally we would ride in his dump truck! I have often thought about him through the years. I know Cindy and Stephanie probably dont remember me but I remember them and I am so sorry for your loss. And for that matter, everyone that knew this wonderful person. He made a huge difference in my life, as he did with my sisters Alisha and Charity. One of my favorite people ever!
