Margaret Ann Surface

Margaret Ann Surface (Nan), 97, from Waiteville, WV, made her way into her eternal home in Heaven on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, while surrounded by God's love and family as she left this world to meet her loving Savior, Jesus Christ, and to be reunited with her beloved husband, Lonzo.

Margaret was born in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, on March 12, 1928. She met Lonzo while he was in the AirForce and stationed in SD. They married on June 22,1954, and made their journey to Waiteville, WV, where Lonzo was born and raised. This is where they made their home.

For 69 years, Margaret lived in Waiteville. She served her community as the postmistress of the Waiteville Post Office for just shy of 20 years. She was loved by the community and by everyone who knew her. To her siblings she was known as Peanut, but to her family and close friends she was always Nan.

Nan was a warrior and one of the strongest and toughest women her family and friends have ever been blessed to know. Nan cherished time spent with her family that she loved so much. She had such a sweet tooth and always had chocolate nearby. Nan spent her time watching the birds, playing cards, reading books, getting the "world news" from the National Enquirer, and watching westerns or Andy Griffith.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Lonzo T. Surface; sons, Darryl Surface and Eddie Dean Jones; mother, Hazel Provost Carlow; father, David Carlow; brothers, David (Brother), Monte, and Charles (Bud) Carlow; her sisters, Clementine (Teenie) Olsen, Marie Jensen (WeeWee), Ina Hargrove, Doris Compton, and Eileen Carlow.

Those left to cherish her memory and to carry on the love she bestowed on them are her son, Bruce Surface and his wife Clara; her grandchildren, Kelly Kanode (husband Jeff), Kevin Surface (wife Brianna), Tracy Buckland (husband Robbie); her great grandchildren, Haylee and Easton Surface; sister, Joleen Graham; sister-in-law, Martha Young; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Friday, November 7, 2025, at Groves-Mann Funeral Home in Union, WV. Funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at New Zion Union Church in Waiteville, WV, officiated by Rev. Jeffrey Kanode and Rev. JB Beane. Burial will follow at the New Zion Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Kevin Surface, Robbie Buckland, Andy Beane, James Wrzosek, Randall Stone, and Jerry Ray Ellis. Honorary pallbearers are Bruce Surface, Easton Surface and Johnny Beane.
