Margaret L. Townley, 83, of Petersburg, Indiana, went home to be with the Lord, on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Amber Manor Care Center in Petersburg, Indiana. She was born on March 25, 1942, in Winslow, Indiana to the late James and Mildred (Mosby) Garland.
Margaret was a long-time member of Vincent Christian Church. She enjoyed cooking and was known as the "Queen of deviled eggs" making dozens at a time. She attended Otwell High School and was one of the first women to work in the coal mines having worked at Old Ben Coal Mine #2 before retiring from there after 29 years of faithful service. She was a proud member of the United Mine Workers of America (U.M.W.A.). Following her retirement Margaret became a caregiver and working with seniors. During her time as a caregiver, you could find Margaret going above and beyond what her normal job duties entailed. She treated her clients like family and kept their houses clean and pristine like she kept her own. She treated those she served like family, even cooking and cleaning for them. Most of all she was a loyal friend and loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her siblings, her children, and grandchildren.
She is survived by her four children, Robert L. Townley, Jr., Bryan Townley, Brent Townley, and Mandi Townley-Jeffries; brother, Tim Garland (Nancy); sister, Janet Vaughn (Mike); sisters-in-law, Christine Garland and Nelda Garland; several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, James and Mildred Garland; sister, Doris J. Blackburn; and brothers, James E., Paul D., Lowell T., and Roger K. Garland.
A visitation will take place at Lamb Basham Memorial Chapel on Friday September 12, 2025, from 2:00 PM, 3 PM (EST) to 8:00 PM, 9 PM EST with memorial service starting at 4:00 PM, with Jim Osgatharpe officiating, then visitation will resume until 8 PM. There will be no burial as it will be a private family matter after cremation has taken place.
