Margaret Waajid Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dunn & Sons Funeral Homes (DC) on Jan. 14, 2026.
Margaret Sutphin Waajid, born April 7, 1948, in South Boston, VA; completed her earthly assignment, January 10, 2026, in Chesapeake, VA after a lengthy illness. She is preceded in death by her parents, Floyd Edgar Sutphin and Maggie Herbert Sutphin, as well as siblings Bernard Sutphin, Mary Robinson, and Wayne Sutphin. She is survived by her siblings: Floyd Sutphin, Jr. (Celestine), Roy Sutphin (Shirley) and Geronimo Sutphin (Pamela) along with a host of nieces, nephews, loving relatives and friends. At an early age Margaret accepted Christ as her personal savior and was baptized at Trinity Baptist Church. Later in life, Margaret's spiritual pathway led her to join the Nation of Islam. Margaret graduated from Mary Bethune High School in 1966. She also went on to graduate from Shaw University with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work (BASW) in 1970. Her strong desire to help and serve others influenced her decision to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). After completion of Nursing School, Margaret joined the Army National Reserve. During the Afghanistan Conflict, she was called to serve her country, in the capacity of a nurse. Margaret did not have any biological children of own. However, she poured an endless supply of love and attention into the lives of her nieces and nephews. She was always available and present to celebrate their achievements, no matter small or large. In turn, her "little people" as she lovingly referred to them as, grew up to be adults that revered her and considered her an integral part of their lives. Margaret's nurturing disposition was evident in the special relationships held with each of her siblings. The community also reaped the benefits of her compassionate nature. Silently and unconditionally, Margaret provided healthcare and mental health services to those in need. She was a true staple in the community and a friend to everyone. When she was not busy helping others, Margaret loved to dance, listen to music, and conduct research. Her assignment has been officially completed, and she will be deeply missed.

I'm so sorry to hear of "Maggie's" passing. She was one of the truest friends I made since moving to Virginia. May Margaret rest well, everyone she encountered is better for knowing her, and we send our love and condolences to the family.
