Maria & I met in 1957 going into the 4th grade. She spoke little to no English, having recently escaped from Budapest with what she & her mom could carry, swimming across the Danube as they were being shot at. (Her brother was nearly 12 years older & had made it out the year before, married & had a baby.) She became one of my best friends in grade school, tho we lost contact as she branched out. Our dads got along like brothers. RIP "Mary."
