Maria M. Bellas, a beacon of love and kindness, left this world suddenly on February 21, 2026, at her home in
Scotia, NY. Born in Duisberg , Germany on November 20, 1947, Maria's journey took her from her birthplace to
Elizabeth, NJ, where she was educated and, finally, to the heart of her family in Scotia, establishing a lifetime of cherished memories.
The beloved wife of the late Joseph G. Bellas, Maria embarked on a shared life with him in 1968, creating a testament of love until his untimely passing in 1978. Her resilient spirit continued to flourish through her dedicated sons, Steven (married to Chrissy), Richard, and Robert (married to Jessica), cementing her legacy in the joys and accomplishments of her offspring. In her grandchildren-Dorothy, Joseph, Adrian Dybas, Cadence Grizzard, Quintus, and Aaralyn-she instilled a kindred, radiant warmth that will persist through the generations. She is also survived by her sister Ursula Thannheiner ( the late Hermann) and several nieces and nephews.
Maria arrived in the United States at the tender age of three and embraced her new home with an open heart. Discovering new horizons throughout her life, she settled in Scotia in 1988, where her presence became a cornerstone of her local community. Her 12-year tenure at Walmart in Glenville was marked not just by her retirement, but by the countless friends and colleagues who were touched by her generosity of spirit.
In every facet of her life, Maria was the embodiment of love. Her affections knew no bounds, evolving from the role of a devoted daughter to her late mother, Erika (Budzuhn) Bellas and continuing as a nurturing mother, an adored Grammy, and a friend to those fortunate enough to have felt the warmth of her care. Her beloved dogs were no exception to her loving heart, and the bond she shared with them only further exemplified her capacity for kindness.
To know Maria was to know a traveler with an insatiable curiosity and a zest for life that was palpable. Her travels enriched not just her own experiences, but also those around her, as she regaled her family with tales and fervor for adventure. Days spent with her grandchildren, her joyful countenance, and the gentle guidance she provided, defined the epitome of a Grammy's love.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2026, from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, Glenville. Interment will take place at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery, Hillside, NJ.
