ALBANY - Maria C. Lobo, 91, of Albany, N.Y., passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on January 15, 1934, in Goa, India, she was the daughter of John and Leopoldina D'Souza. She was a devoted sister to the late Ida (India), Antoinette (India); and is survived by sister, Eliza (Canada); and many loving nieces and nephews.
Maria was the beloved wife to the late Anthony Lobo and devoted mother to son, Ian (Alex); son, Carl (Susan); and daughter, Audra (Rich). Her greatest joy was her grandchildren, Patrick, Zac, Katie and Luke, who will forever cherish her warmth, kindness and love.
Maria's journey began in Goa before moving to Bombay (India) and later to Uganda (Africa) with her husband, Anthony. She worked as a stenographer before eventually settling in Albany, N.Y., where she worked as a secretary for the NYS Education Department and eventually retiring from the Counsel's office for SUNY. A proud Roman Catholic, she faced life's many challenges with grace, including her remarkable strength in relocating her family from Uganda, during the expulsion of Asians from East Africa. With three young children, she found refuge in the UK, before permanently building a warm and loving home in Albany, where they lived for over 50 years.
Maria was known for her ever-present smile, love of cooking, baking and passion for travel. She especially loved spending the last few winters with Audra and Rich in Florida. She was a dedicated fan of the NY Mets and enjoyed watching sports and game shows.
A funeral service will be held at St. Francis of Assisi, 391 Delaware Ave., Albany, N.Y., on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 9:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in her memory. Maria's legacy of strength, love and unwavering optimism will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
