It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our mom, grandmother ("Vava"), and great-grandmother, Maria Bernadette Oliveira, who passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, at Bougainvillea's Care Home in South San Francisco, at the age of 92.
Maria was born on March 29, 1933, in the Azores, Portugal. In 1956, she married the love of her life, Joe R. Oliveira, and together they began a journey defined by courage, sacrifice, faith, and a deep love for family. In 1959, Maria bravely left behind everything she knew-her family, friends, and homeland-to immigrate to the United States with her husband and young daughter, Maria, in search of a better future. Sponsored by Joe's uncle, a farmer, they settled in Half Moon Bay, where they built a life from the ground up. Five years later, their second daughter, Caroline, was born, completing their family.
Maria was the heart of her home and took great pride in keeping it immaculate. There was always a cookie jar filled with freshly baked Portuguese cookies or one of her famous marble cakes ready to serve to visitors, especially her grandchildren. Her hands were always busy-crocheting blankets, tablecloths, and doilies that she lovingly gifted to family and friends. Those handmade pieces now hold even more meaning, each one stitched with patience, care, and love.
A hard worker through and through, Maria spent many years at the Blue Gate Candle Factory before pushing herself to do more. With limited formal education and a lot of determination, she studied hard and became a Certified Nursing Assistant, working night shifts at St. Catherine's Hospital in the nursing home department. It wasn't easy, but Maria never shied away from doing what was necessary for her family.
Her faith was the foundation of her life. A devoted Catholic, Maria was rarely without her rosary. Prayer gave her strength, comfort, and peace, and she lived her faith through quiet kindness, patience, and compassion. She was a constant presence at her grandchildren's school events at Our Lady of Angels, always there, always proud.
Maria became a grandmother for the first time in 1985 with the birth of Kenny, then again in 1988 with Timmy, and later welcomed Christopher in 1994 and Christina in 1996. She played an essential role in helping raise her grandchildren, offering love, guidance, and stability that shaped their lives in lasting ways.
In 1990, Maria's heart was broken when she lost her husband and soulmate, becoming a widow at just 57 years old. Still, she carried on with strength and grace, always putting her family first.
In her later years, Maria lived with dementia and spent nearly seven years at Bougainvillea's Care Home, where she received exceptional love and care. She was often seen beautifully dressed in her wheelchair, wearing one of her many signature hats. We will forever cherish her big smile, her gentle kisses, and those precious moments when she recognized us on her good days.
Maria is survived by her daughters, Maria Soares and Caroline Romeo; her son-in-law Charlie Romeo; her grandchildren Kenny (Darcy), Timmy (Kelsey), Christopher (Daniela), and Christina (Alex); and her great-grandchildren Brody, Brynlee, Rafaella, and Louie, who brought her so much joy. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Joe Oliveira, her brothers Manuel Caetano and Humberto Silva, and her son-in-law Oliver Soares.
A viewing will be held on January 6, 2026, at 12:00 PM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00 PM at Our Lady of Angels Church in Burlingame. A celebration luncheon will follow immediately after. Burial will be private the next day.
