Maria Proffitt Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 4, 2026.
Maria Proffitt of Charlottesville, Va. passed away Jan 29, 2026 at Barclay of Charlottesville Assisted Living. She was 97.

She was born May 13, 1928 in Nelson County and was the daughter of Jessie and Gallie Snead.

Maria was preceded in death by two sons: Jimmy Mills and Roy Mills both of Charlottesville.

Maria was a long-time member of the Charlottesville Moose Lodge. She enjoyed country music, dancing, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed gardening and loved to share vegetables with neighbors and friends.

Maria worked in the U.Va. Radiology Department for many years and later retired from Wilson Trucking Company where she worked as a part time secretary, for 13 years.

Maria's friendship and laughter will be missed by all who knew her and loved her.

A special thanks to Bobby and Linda (niece) Carefoot for faithful visits, meals and gifts; to Andy Mills (nephew) for visits and flowers; to Ronnie (nephew) and Cherie Snead for visits, gifts, and flowers and to Tom and Sue Hatch for all their help over the last ten years. Without their help it would have been impossible for her to remain in the home she loved so much, for as long as she did.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 5,2026 at Hill & Wood Funeral Service, Charlottesville. Pastor Larry Wingfield will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad, 828 McIntire Road, Charlottesville, Va. 22903, the Rivanna Baptist Church, 1819 East Market Street, Charlottesville, Va. 22903 or Legacy Hospice 650 Peter Jefferson Pkwy Suite 310, Charlottesville, VA 2291
