Maria Zywotchenko - Wowtschuk died peacefully and prayerfully on September 6th, 2025 at the age of 97.
Maria was born on July 23, 1928 in Karavan, Ukraine. She was one of 7 children. Maria, her parents and three siblings survived the forced starvation of Ukraine. She grew up on her family's farm during the prelude to World War II. She survived through the horrors of starvation and war torn Eastern Europe. She and her family ended up in Regensburg Germany at a displaced persons camp after the war. There she met the love of her life and husband Vadym Wowk. They quickly married and immigrated to the United States. The US Government changed their name to Wowtschuk once they arrived in Boston. Then began their American Dream story. They eventually built their house in Putnam Valley NY where they raised their children. They worked hard, achieved much and endured more than most can imagine.
Maria was known to be a kind and giving person. Loved her family, husband, children and grandchildren more than anything. Maria was guided by her deep faith and people often referred to her as an angel. Maria's initial spiritual connection began as a child. She had fallen in a river and was drowning when, as she would tell it, an angel came to save her. From that moment on, she never waivered in her faith. Maria enjoyed working hard and seldom found time to sit and just relax. She always had a garden and was known for her fabulous cooking and canning. Maria worked in real estate and found great joy in helping people find their first homes. Maria and Walter dreamt big and brought all their goals to reality. One of her biggest dreams was building a house on her favorite Caribbean island, Montserrat. Like in Ukraine and New York she was known on the island for her beautiful smile and giving heart. Always hosting cocktail and dinner parties or simply bringing a meal to someone in need.
Maria was predeceased by her husband Walter (2011) and son Ihor (2023). She is survived by her daughters Luba (John) Shukers, Elizabeth (Jeff) Bauer, grandchildren Bohdon (Angela), Matthew (Breanne), Erik & Julia and great grandchildren Paulina, Victoria, Lazaro and Sylas.
