Marian E. Paynter, age 93, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2023, at her home in Darlington. She was born in Mineral Point, WI on November 11, 1929, the daughter of Raymond and Bertha (Golliner) Clayton. She attended rural schools in Iowa and Lafayette Counties and graduated from Darlington High School in 1947. She then went on to attend summer school at Bayless Business College in Dubuque, IA. Marian worked for Lafayette County Superintendent of Schools, later moving to Madison where she worked for an attorney and then at U.S. Armed Forces Institute until 1952. On June 7, 1952, she married John W. Paynter. She farmed with her husband near Calamine for just short of 20 years. She also cooked at Willow Springs School for 4 of those years. They moved to Darlington in 1971, and she began working at First National Bank until she retired in 1995. Later, she worked at Lands End during their holiday season.
Marian is survived by her children: Louis (Jane) Paynter of Fond du Lac, WI, Connie (Randy) Ubersox of rural Shullsburg, WI, Cathy Paynter of Appleton, WI, and Gary (Teresa) Paynter of Morrow, OH; her grandchildren: Kathleen (Ken) Cooper of Eden Prairie, MN, Ryan (Kim) Ubersox of Waunakee, WI, and Crystal (Quentin) Turner of St. James, MN; her great-grandchildren: Lily, Maddie, and Avery Cooper, Jake and Audra Ubersox, and Cole Turner; one sister-in-law: Gloria Sargent and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and special friend: Ed Hirsbrunner; her parents; her parents-in-law: William and Frances Paynter; her brothers: Donald (Arleen) Clayton, Charles (Marj) Clayton, Everett (Betty) Clayton, and Robert (Della) Clayton; brothers and sisters-in-law: Gordon Paynter, Ruth (Merville) Hillery, Harriet (Donald) Rowe and Margaret (Ralph) Whalen; many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Marian was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Darlington where she was part of the Women's Guild and a past officer on it's Church Consistory. She loved to be outside where she enjoyed gardening. Her family was her pride and joy and she cherished the time she spent with them creating memories they will all remember forever.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 11:30 A.M. at Immanuel United Church of Christ (339 E. Louisa St., Darlington) with Rev. Bill Whitford officiating. The burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery. A visitation will be held Saturday, April 22, 2023, from 9:00 A.M. until 11:15 A.M. at Immanuel United Church of Christ. The Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington is serving the family. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.ericksonfuneralhome.com.
