Marie (Sis) Carolyn (McKovich) Casher, age 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep at The Village of St. Edward in Fairlawn on December 28, 2023.
Born in Akron, Ohio in 1929, she grew up in Ellet and lived most of her adult life in Mogadore and Springfield. She enjoyed her last 12 years at Cardinal Retirement Village in Cuyahoga Falls. Marie graduated from East High School in Akron and earned her teaching degree from The University of Akron. She taught for over 30 years at O.H. Somers Elementary School in Mogadore, touching the lives of countless students, parents, and co-workers. Marie attended St. Matthews Catholic Church in Ellet and was involved in the St. Vincent de Paul Society for decades. She was also active in the Divorced Catholics group, her Goodyear Hiking club, various euchre groups, and her teacher’s union. Marie lived in post-war Germany for several years during her husband’s military service. After retirement, she travelled the country and the world. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s events, writing family stories, baking, and celebrating the holidays.
Marie was preceded in death by her father John McKovich, mother Mabel (Schrader) McKovich, brothers Don (Pat) McKovich and Michael (Pat) McKovich and ex-husband John Casher. She is survived by her children Mark (Chris), Jeff (Barb), Jim (Diane), and Judi Casher. Marie is also survived by her grandchildren Brian (Erika) Casher, Kate (Nick) Pettit, Danny (Sam) Casher, Michael (Lindsey) Casher, and Jessie (Matt) Casher. Also surviving are great-grandchildren Annabelle Casher, Caroline Casher, Teddy Pettit, Tilly Petit, and Charley Casher. She is also survived by her dear friends Thelma Chapman and Joyce (Schrader) Coyne. The family would like to thank Cardinal Retirement Village and the Village of St. Edward for their wonderful care.
Friends may call at the Donovan Funeral Home, 34 S. Cleveland Avenue, Sunday January 7, 2024 from 2 to 5 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday January 8, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2603 Benton Street, Akron, with the Reverend Michael Williamson celebrating. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, 2643 Waterloo Road, Mogadore, OH 44260 following the mass. Flowers may be sent to the Donovan Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org) or The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVPUSA.org).
