Marie "Jenny" Gatwood was reunited with her husband, Hugh Lee, of 64 years on April 27, 2023. She passed away peacefully at her home at age 96 surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Antwerp, Belgium, on July 28, 1926. During World War II, she survived Nazi occupation and ultimately met her husband while he was serving in the U.S. Army. They married on July 10, 1946, and she relocated to Mobile, Alabama where she resided for 76 years.
She had five children whom she loved dearly. Jenny was also a dedicated grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She was a voracious reader of all genres. She read her Bible every day and read it from beginning to end numerous times throughout her lifetime. She loved to travel and visited Portugal and Spain at the age of 95.
She will be remembered as a witty, loving, and high-spirited woman who put her family first. Even at the end, her memory and meticulous organizational skills remained unrivaled.
Jenny is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son Randy, one granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters; Loretta (Johnny Ray, deceased) Cahoon of Daphne, Alabama; Miriam (Jimmy) Gill of Mobile, Alabama; Anitta (Ronnie) Tanner of Semmes, Alabama; and her son, Mark (Tina) Gatwood of Saraland, Alabama. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Her legacy will live on through each one of them.
A service will be held in her honor on Monday, May 1st, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens, Mobile, Alabama. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m.
Private graveside service to be held at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, donations can also be made to the Child Advocacy Center in Mobile, AL., in honor of Ms. Gatwood.
