Marie Elizabeth Hogan, 83, of Russell, Kansas, died on Monday, March 23, 2026, at the Wesley Woodlawn Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.

Marie was one of the first babies born at the Russell Reg. Hospital (called Russell City Hospital at that time) to Jacob Schwartz, Jr. and Caroline (Flegler) Schwartz on March 8th, 1943. She attended West Kennebec through 4th grade, 5-8 was at the newly constructed Lincoln School near Milberger, KS, then attended Russell High School graduating in 1961 and took out reach classes from BCCC.

She was employed at the Russell Regional Hospital for 10 years, 1960-1970. When David graduated from high school and went to K-State, she worked as the custodian at the Russell Daily News, then worked for Nadene Albrecht as a girl Friday. She was then a para-professional at Bickerdyke School 2 ½ years and was one of two secretaries at RMS for 23 ½ years, retiring in 2005.

Marie married Gilford Hogan in 1961. They were blessed with 3 children: David, Jeff, and Debbie. She lived all her life in Russell. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Trinity Ladies, Sunday School Teacher, Chairman of the Communion Stewards, Gingham Girls EU, worked Thursdays at the Thrift Shop, past member and president of the Russell Ladies Golf Association and delivered Meals on Wheels. She played bridge at the Senior Center on Wednesdays and also filled in for bridge clubs.

She loved to golf, read, going to Kansas City Chiefs games when the weather was nice, playing bridge, riding bikes, taking the kids skiing and to music concerts, and LOVED doing things with her grandkids and great grandkids. Marie spent many years driving to Wichita to help with Kiera, Aftan, Heidi, and McKenzie. Marie, David, and three of the girls went to Cancun, that was her first airplane ride (David told her she was going; she didn’t want to fly, but he told her in church on Mother’s Day he had the tickets. He was so lucky he was in church). Loved having Dylan and Kaycie here in Russell to see anytime. She traveled to Arizona for many years on Amtrak or flew to be with her daughter Debbie and family. Sevrin and Asher brought her great joy, from babies to the present. They went to Newport Beach, CA (to see her cousin Dick Runyon), camping at Roosevelt Lake, Worlds of Fun, Disneyland in CA and Disney World in FL; and took in all the points of interest in Florida and visited relatives there. Enjoyed attending the boys' basketball tournaments and high school track meets.

Surviving family include her husband Gilford, sons David (Dana) Hogan of Park City, KS and Jeff Hogan of Russell, KS; daughter Debbie (Eric) St. Pierre of Gilbert, AZ; Grandchildren: Kiera (Jeremy) Lakin of Wichita, KS; Aftan Hogan of Hoisington, KS; Heidi (Chris) Dreher of Park City, KS; McKenzie (Devon) Stapleton of Bel Aire, KS; Dylan Hogan of Russell, KS; Kaycie Hogan of Russell, KS; Sevrin and Asher St. Pierre of Gilbert, AZ; Brother: Mark (Kaye) Schwartz of Buhler, KS; Nephew: Jake (Danielle) Schwartz of Manhattan; Niece: Jacque (Clint) Wilson of Scott City, KS; Cousins: David Lee Schwartz of Fuquay-Varina, NC; Dr. Dick Runyon of Longmont, CO; RJ Barnes of Olatha, KS; and Flegler cousins.
