COHOES Marie "Omi" Wiwczar, 95, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 24, 2024.
Marie was born June 17, 1928 in Radautz, Romania to Emil and Paulina Gruszinski Turner. She emigrated to the US in 1951 and settled in Cohoes where she and her husband, Michael Wiwczar, Sr. raised their family. She worked at the former Swanknit Co. in Cohoes, Barclay Home Products and the Troy District Shirt Co.
Marie was a communicant of St. Peter & St. Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church and volunteered at their many parish events. She used to frequent Troy's Germania Hall and enjoyed cooking German and Ukrainian foods. She also loved to listen to accordion music played by her son, Peter.
Marie loved and cherished spending time with family, especially her "Shnookles." She is survived by her beloved son, Michael Wiwczar, Jr. and his wife Mary Ann of Gansevoort and by her adored grandchildren, Melissa Murphy (Eric), Michael Peter Wiwczar (Dana) and Peter Michael Wiwczar; by her great granddaughters, Olivia, Addison and Brianna Murphy. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Pietro Cappabianca; her nieces, Elizabeth and Doris Cappabianca as well as several nieces and nephews in Germany and cousins in Ohio.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Michael Wiwczar, Sr.; by her son, Peter John Wiwczar and by her siblings, Hilda Cappabianca and Lottie Hassan.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:45 a.m. from the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes and at 12:30 p.m. in St. Peter & St. Paul's Ukrainian Catholic Church. Interment will follow in St. Peter & St. Paul's Cemetery, Waterford.
Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home Saturday from 10 – 11:45 a.m. prior to the Mass.
The Wiwczar family would like to extend their special thanks to "Betty" at Wesley Healthcare Center who kept Marie smiling and out of trouble. They would also like to thank the Wesley Healthcare staff at 5 Springs for their loving care over the past years and for providing a comforting atmosphere in her last days.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wesley Foundation, 131 Lawrence St., Saratoga, NY 12866.
