Marilyn Chamberlain, a lifelong resident of
Kansas City, Missouri, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at age 96. Born September 10, 1929, to William and Mamie West, Marilyn was the eighth of fourteen children. She was the last of her siblings to pass on to glory.
At the age of ten, Marilyn gave her life to Christ. She was baptized at Highland Avenue Baptist Church, the present-day Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. At Highland she was very active on the Junior Usher Board and in the youth choir, The Junior Christian Singers. She had a beautiful soprano voice.
Marilyn loved school and learning. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1947. She loved all subjects, but especially math. Her siblings referred to her as "the smart one." Marilyn was also athletic and did very well in baseball and basketball.
As a teen, Marilyn had dreams of becoming a teacher. Instead, she would use her talents and abilities to help her own children to become successful in school and life.
When Marilyn met her husband Mosie, she was at the bus stop on her way to work. They started out as friends, and four years later, on April 19, 1954, they became husband and wife. From their union came ten children, Karen Michelle, Darlene, Darryl Anthony, Derek Maurice, Brian Cedric, twins Marian Denise and Marc Edwin, Glenn Donovan, Sophia Marilyn, and Bonnye Carrolle.
Marilyn worked for the Internal Revenue Service as a keypunch operator from 1959-1963. However, during 1963, when the twins were born, she decided to become a full-time homemaker and devote her life to raising her children. She taught her children about Jesus, read the Bible to them, and encouraged them to love learning and to be creative. Her children excel in many areas because of Marilyn's encouragement and direction.
A kind and gracious woman, Marilyn was loved dearly by her family and friends. She had a beautiful smile that would light up any room she was in. She was also an excellent cook and had many specialties. Her lemon meringue pie and bread pudding could have been sold at any fine bakery.
Preceding Marilyn in death was her husband, Mosie Chamberlain, two sons, Brian and Marc Chamberlain, her grandson, Ryan Presswood, her parents, and nine brothers and four sisters.
Marilyn leaves to cherish her memory five daughters, Karen (Joe) Presswood, Lawrence, Kansas, Darlene Chamberlain, Lee's Summit, Missouri, Marian Woodruff,
Kansas City, Missouri, Sophia (George Douglas) Carr, Nevada, Missouri, and Bonnye (Dale) Brown, Greenwood, Missouri; three sons, Darryl Chamberlain, Lee's Summit, Derek (Tomiko) Chamberlain, Lee's Summit, and Glenn (La Trina) Chamberlain, Kansas City; daughter in law, Sharon Chamberlain, Grandview, Missouri; 27 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; sister in law, Luella West, Kansas City; eleven nieces, seventeen nephews, and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends.
