Marilyn Loree (Muxen) Mayer, 92, of Frankfort, SD, passed away surrounded by family on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield, SD.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 25, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. A scriptural prayer service, time of sharing, and rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 26, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Redfield with Reverend John Short officiating. After the service, lunch will be served in the church hall. Marilyn will be laid to rest at St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery in Frankfort following lunch and fellowship.

Both the prayer service and funeral Mass will be live-streamed on the funeral home's website below Marilyn's obituary. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield (www.hykefuneralhome.com).

Marilyn was born October 17, 1932, on the family farm in Harmony Township, 4 miles east of Frankfort, to Matthew J. and Amy E. (Mullenberg) Muxen. She attended country school through 8th grade, walking or riding bicycle 2 ½ miles, weather permitting. She graduated from Frankfort High School in 1950.

Marilyn was united in marriage to Peter H. Mayer on Nov. 25, 1950, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Redfield. They lived on a farm near the Bert Mason farm, where Pete was employed. In 1954, they moved to Marilyn's parents' farm, where she was born and has resided since. Pete passed away in 1999.

Marilyn was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church since 1950 until it's closing and then became a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Redfield. She was active at the Frankfort Community Center, a member of Doland Senior Citizens and the Red Hat Ladies, and in recent years, enjoyed her card playing groups 3 times a week.

She enjoyed keeping her yard mowed and tending to her flowers and loved her home. She enjoyed family dinners and gatherings with her kids, grandchildren, and their families.

She had travelled to all 50 of the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska, and also a Panama Cruise.

She is survived by her four sons and one daughter: Michael (Carla), Centennial, CO; Joe, Frankfort; Reid (Judy), Frankfort; Patrick, Minnetonka, MN, and Amy (Stacey) Mathias, Fargo, ND; grandchildren: Heidi (Troy) Kruse, Sturgis, SD; Matthew (Tiffany) Mayer, Doland, SD; Mollie (Jim) Lieffort, Watertown, SD; Devan Mayer, Plano, TX; Hunter Mathias, Fargo, ND, and step grandson, Jordan Newman, Miami, FL. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Miriam and Seth Kruse, Sturgis, SD; Stetson Mayer, Doland, SD; and Emery and Talan Lieffort, Watertown, SD; and several nieces and nephews.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her husband Pete and her brothers: Milo, Merle, and Duane Muxen.
