Marilyn A. Spoerl, 96, of Hampton, NH, passed away peacefully at her home on February 15, 2025. She was born on August 24, 1928, in Jamestown, NY, to the late Chester Berg and Editha (Verfurth) Berg.
Marilyn grew up in Jamestown, and was one of two children in her family. After graduating from high school, she pursued her college education in Miami University of Ohio, where she earned her Bachelor's degree. Marilyn married the love of her life, Robert E. Spoerl, a dedicated Navy man on April 12, 1953, embarking on a beautiful life together that would span over five decades. Together, they raised four children and initially lived in Short Hills, NJ, before settling in the seacoast area of New Hampshire in 1960.
In her early years, Marilyn worked in New York City, but her true passion blossomed when she became a devoted homemaker, creating a loving and welcoming home for her family. Her culinary skills, marked by an unwavering love of cooking, became one of her defining traits, and her kitchen was often the heart of family gatherings and community events.
Marilyn's vibrant and outgoing personality made her a beloved member of her community. She was a Trustee of Exeter Hospital, founding member of The Exeter Fashion Show. She volunteered with hospice and Big Brother/Big Sister, making a lasting impact on the lives of those she served. A longtime member of The Congregational Church of Exeter, Marilyn also enjoyed playing bridge and was an active participant in several bridge groups. She was a former member of the Junior League of Boston and always cherished the friendships and experiences she gained through her social engagements.
Marilyn was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert, on August 8, 2007, as well as her brother, David Berg, and son-in-law, Chris Coombs.
She is survived by her son, Robert E. Spoerl Jr. and his wife, Julie, of Kensington, NH; three daughters, Sally Pantages of Scottsdale, AZ, Nancy Badavas and her husband, Chuck, of Ipswich, MA, and Holly Coombs of St. Croix; nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored deeply, and her many friends from all throughout her life especially those from Phillips Exeter Academy and Exeter High School students.
A celebration of Marilyn's life will be held at a later date, and details will be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to a hospice organization of your choice.

I was so sad to see news of Marilyn's passing. I truely loved her! She was one of my bridge partners, and we had so much fun! She loved entertaining, cooking and her dogs, and especially playing bridge. I think of her so often, and am sorry I didn't get to see her once more. My thoughts and prayers are with the family as they celebrate a long and wonderful life

I love that picture of her, and is the way I will always remember her!
