Marion “Bud” Mikel, age 96, of Bremen passed away following a brief illness on Saturday September 06, 2025 in Raclin Hospice House in Mishawaka. Bud was born on January 27, 1929, four miles north of Bremen to Willard and Mable (Culp) Mikel. Bud graduated from Madison High School where he played basketball and had a long-standing high jump record in track and field. Bud married Helen Jane Mattern in May of 1951 before he was deployed overseas. Bud and Helen were married 68 years before Helen passed away in 2020. Bud was an active member of Bremen United Methodist Church and formerly Grace United Methodist Church both in Bremen.
Surviving are sons, Mark A. Mikel of Champaign, IL, Matthew (Janet) L. Mikel of Bremen, and daughter, Marla (Joe) Gilbert of Slidell Louisiana. Bud’s Grandchildren are Ryan (Amy) Johanson of Kirkland, IN, Samantha (Lance) Perez Fort Meyer, FL), Alex (Jessica) Mikel of Bremen, Daniel (Ana) Mikel of Berkeley, CA, Rebecca (Justin) Kolpak of Chicago, Conner (Jayson) Smith of Chicago, Mason Gilbert of Nashville, and 9 great grandchildren. He has one surviving sister Eleanor Strang (Nappanee) and brother Dale Mikel (Bremen). Bud was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Marietta Franklin and Caroll (June) Gall and one brother Roger Mikel.
Bud was a veteran of the Korean War, was president of Ideal Oil Company in Bremen for nearly 40 years, a member of the American Legion and Kiwanis, and served on the founding board of Potawatomi Wildlife Park. Bud cherished his family and following their activities and growth, was an active woodworker, a fisherman, gardening and farming.
Visitation will be held from 3:00-7:00 pm, Tuesday, September 9, 2025 in Bremen United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday, September 10, 2025 in the church with Pastor Max Milton officiating. Burial will follow in Bremen Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions be made to Bremen United Methodist Church, 302 Plymouth St, Bremen, IN 46506.
