Marion Smith Thomas, age 97 of Glenham, passed away on November 6, 2025 at NYS VA Nursing Home Montrose.
Born on October 14, 1928 in Beacon. She was the daughter of George E. Smith and Elizabeth Hunt Smith. She married the love of her life, Al Thomas, who predeceased her 10 years to the day, on November 6, 2015.
As a girl she worked as an usher at the Beacon Movie Theater. After graduating from Beacon High School, she went on to work as a secretary at Texaco Research. After marriage and expecting her first child she left Texaco to be a homemaker, raising her 3 children. She did keep her part time job as bookkeeper and did payroll for The Mary Jen Nursing Rest Home in Beacon, which was owned and run by her mother. Once her children were grown and the Rest Home closed, she went on to work for H&R Block during tax season as a tax preparer. She always said she loved working with figures.
She was gifted with the skill of knitting, making many sweaters, blankets and such for all the family members and gifts for friends. She was a skilled seamstress and made most of her own clothes. Being short, she could make quality clothes that fit her right. She was a skilled tailor and even took classes in upholstery and still has the chair she made. She loved antiquing, old houses, auctions and restoring any piece of furniture to make it look almost new.
As the oldest member of the First Presbyterian Church in Beacon, 90 years, she is an Elder, was treasurer, Sunday School Teacher and was part of the Alpha Group, a women's group that supported the church by doing various fundraisers.
She loved going to her place on Cape Cod, MA, where she spent every August with her family. She loved Big Band Dancing and could be found on any dance floor with her only partner Al.
She is survived by her children: Robin Thomas (Richard) of Glenham, Wendy Conley (Alfred) of Jackson NJ, Keith Thomas of Chelsea. Her grandchildren: Jessica Williams (Dan), Seth Conley (Kim), Jeremiah French (Corrine), Ryan Thomas (Sarah), Dylan Conley (Destiny), John Keller, Jr. (Jenna), Sara Thomas (Kate) and 8 great grandchildren. Her sisters-in-law, Ann Thomas and Elizabeth Hughes.
She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law Dawn; her brothers, Norman and George Smith and her sisters, Laurel Wiley and Catherine Verdi; her brothers-in-law, Joseph, Gerry and Walter.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 11, 2025 from 2-8 at her home at 1 Petticoat Lane Beacon, NY. A memorial service will be held Wednesday November 12, 2025 at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Beacon. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Beacon.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 50 Liberty Street Beacon, NY or to the Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps 1 Arquilla Drive Beacon, NY or to Slater Chemical Fire Department 76 Old Glenham Road, Glenham, NY 12527.
