Marion Ann Wolfel (nee Schumm), 92, of Waldwick, NJ, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2023. Marion was born on June 6, 1931, in Bronx, NY, to the late Harry Schumm and Helen Brady-Schumm.
Marion is survived by her son Scott, his wife Vicki, her beloved granddaughter Kate, and step-granddaughter Sofia. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Eleanor Fennell, husband Richard, and beloved daughter Christine.
Marion attended St. Brendan's High School (adjacent to St. Patrick's Cathedral) in NY. She returned to school later in life and, earned a BA in Psychology from Ramapo College of New Jersey when she was 57, and subsequently became a Certified Alcoholism Counselor.
Throughout her career, Marion held various office jobs in NY before becoming a dedicated homemaker after starting a family. In the early 70s, she seized an opportunity and acquired a small advertising agency called Ad-Ventures in Ridgewood, NJ, transforming it into a successful business. However, tragedy struck in 1988 when Marion's daughter Christine lost her life due to addiction. Inspired by this devastating event, Marion embarked on a new career path as an Alcoholism Counselor at Spring House, a halfway house for female addicts in Paramus, and later at Hackensack Medical Center. Her compassionate nature and dedication helped countless individuals on their journey to recovery. Marion retired at the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy of hope and healing.
Marion found solace and spiritual guidance at The Church of the Nativity in Midland Park. Even when she became homebound, Father Jason Manich would visit her, offering spiritual counsel and blessings.
In her leisure time, Marion enjoyed the beach, particularly Beach Haven, which became a cherished place of peace and joy for her and her family. She also loved playing Mahjong and word games like Scrabble, using her sharp and inquisitive mind to engage with friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marion's name to the Friends of Spring House scholarship fund, where Marion worked as an alcoholism counselor. Contributions can be made at http://www.friendsofspringhouseonline.org/donate.html.
Marion Ann Wolfel will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her legacy of compassion, strength, and resilience will forever be remembered.
