Marjorie M. Anderson age 93 of Kennett Square, Pa., died Saturday December 6, 2014 at Kendal Retirement community in Kennett Square. Born in Philadelphia, she lived in the Philadelphia area most of her life. Graduating from Haverford High School in 1937 and from the University of Pennsylvania in 1941, she was a retired teacher, who had taught at schools in four states. Starting in Pleasantville, New Jersey in 1942, she went on to teach in Haverford Township, Tredyffrin-Easttown Township, Wilmington Friends School, and Friends School, Baltimore, where she was dean of girls. Her final teaching position was that of English Department Chairman at Jenkintown High School, where she taught for fifteen years. Retiring in 1984, she spent most of the next year as a volunteer teacher of English to adults at the Sun Day Care Centre in the Gaza Strip. In addition to her time in Gaza, her travels included trips to Egypt, Russia, China, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, as well as several visits to the British Isles. A member of Kennett Friends Meeting, she was active in the affairs of the Religious Society of Friends, having served as clerk of Abington and Kennett Meetings, clerk of the western Quarter of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, recording clerk and presiding clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, and as a member of several monthly and yearly meeting committees. A former member of the National Council of Teachers of English, she was also a member for several years of the American Association of University Women and of Pi Lambda Theta, education honorary society. A longtime member of the Abington Choral Club, she later sang with the Kendal Singers and the Wayne Oratorio Society. After moving to Kendal in 1990, she participated in many activities there. In addition, she served on the Kennett Area Senior Center Board, volunteered for many years at the Senior Center Book Shop, represented Kennett Friends Meeting on the area Ministeriurn,was a longtime "senior reader" at Chadds Ford Elementary School, and volunteered at the Kennett Middle School's After the Bell program. She was predeceased by two sisters, Louise A. Terzian and Janet A. Jessen, she is survived by nieces Anne T. Booher, Christine J. Barber, and Karen Jessen and nephews David Terzian and Philip Terzian, as well as their children and grandchildren. Her memorial meeting for worship will be held at a later date at the Auditorium of Kendal retirement Community 1109 East Baltimore Pike Kennett square, PA 19348. Interment will be held privately.
