Marjorie Ellen Auer née Coffey of Park Ridge passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 9, 2025, at the age of 90. Marge led a life marked by dedication, kindness, and love for her family and community.
Marge was born the third of four children to Francis and Marguerite Coffey née McNamara on April 16, 1934, in Chicago. Along with her older brother James, sister Mary Therese (later Sr. Benita Coffey, OSB) and youngest brother Thomas, Marge grew up in the Edgewater neighborhood as a member and elementary school graduate of St. Gertrude parish. A proud alumna of St. Scholastica Academy of Chicago and Marquette University, where she majored in Education, Marge went on to teach first grade in classrooms of over 40 students at Stockton Elementary in Chicago. Her story was featured in a Tribune article highlighting the life of a young single teacher in the 1950s.
Marge met her husband Ron on a blind date. They corresponded during his Naval deployment and married on July 12, 1958 only a few days after the death of her father. The couple settled into an Edgewater apartment to begin their life together. Her first daughter Kathryn Ann sadly died only a few weeks after birth. They eventually moved to Park Ridge where they raised a family of six children in a home with only one shower.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Ronald Auer (2016), her daughters, Kathryn Ann Auer (1959) and Mary Therese Bolt (2009), and her brother, Jim Coffey (2012).
She is survived by her children; Patty (John) Sebahar, Joe (Kathleen Kelly) Auer, Liz (Tim) Uligian, Tom (Christina) Auer, and Jeanne (John) Schutz. Marge leaves behind her cherished siblings, Benita and Tom, as well as her fourteen adored grandchildren: Susan, Kyle, Zack, Megan, Hayley, Eddie, Marty, Jacob, Owen, Joe, Brian, Maddie, Mary Kate, and Anton.
Marge was a devoted parishioner of Mary, Seat of Wisdom parish, where she actively participated in the Guardian Angel guild and volunteered countless hours serving the rectory and parish school. Later in life she enjoyed working with her friends at Commercial Packaging of Chicago. She will be remembered for her warm personality, sharp wit, generosity, and signature red lipstick which endeared her to friends and community members.
Marge cherished family and opened her home to countless holiday gatherings. The Auer house was known for its hospitality, welcoming all who entered with ease, flowing drinks, and lots of laughs. She developed deep, long-lasting friendships she treasured from so many different areas of her life.
Marge bravely faced the impact of Parkinson's Disease on her life and body during most of the last decade of her life. Her family is grateful to the many caregivers who helped support Marge's independence and dignity through the years.
