Marjorie Carlson was born into a family of faith, ministry and service. Her parents, Salvation Army Officers, welcomed her on June 21, 1941 in Jersey City, New Jersey. She was Promoted to Glory on March 4, 2023 from her home in Kissimmee, Florida.
Her life was quietly impactful because of her studious, unswerving devotion to what was important. She prepared well for everything she undertook to accomplish, as evidenced by being co-Valedictorian of her high school graduating class in Norwood, Ohio, and subsequent full scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania.
Very revealing was the type of employment she engaged in through the years. In earlier days she worked in New York as a teacher in Yonkers, for the state of New York while living in Albany, and then the Methodist Board of Missions in Westchester County. Later, while in New Jersey, she developed and led the government funded Monmouth County Senior Citizens' Feeding Program at six locations, under the auspices of the Asbury Park Corps with both employee staff and volunteers. Following the closure of this program, she went on to serve as an editor at the Christian publishing firm of Loizeaux Brothers, and finally served in the office of the Neptune High School until she entered retirement.
Her devotion to ministry was undeniable. She served as a Sunday School teacher, Corps Cadet Counselor, Corps Council member, Songster and in other supportive roles. She was faithful to the local corps and dependable, steadfast and sure in her beliefs, unwavering in the practice of her faith.
Mention must be made of her untiring care for parents, Lt. Colonels F. William and Grace Carlson, as they both needed full time attention in their later years as a result of illnesses. She never complained, but cared for them faithfully, enabling them to remain at home.
She deeply loved her family, sister Anne Carlson, brother Colonel William Carlson, sister-in-law Colonel Marcella Carlson, as well as her nephew William Carlson, Jr., niece Elizabeth Bowman with her husband Robert and daughters Olivia, Alyssa and Emma. Her joy was evident when able to be with them. She will be missed by family and friends alike.
When asked what she would want said about her life when the time came, she said we should tell people that she was a Christian. Hers was a simple and powerful faith, expressed beautifully in that request.
She loved John 14 - "Do not let your hearts be troubled... My father's house has many rooms... I am going there to prepare a place for you... I will come back and take you to be with me." She has now experienced this reality.
