Marjorie "Marge" Parthum ( Hopkins), 91, of
Chestnut Hill, MA, formerly of Andover, MA, passed away quietly at her home on September 1, 2023. Beloved wife for 59 years of the late Robert (Bob) Parthum and cherished mother of her late son, Andrew Parthum. Survived by son John Parthum (Holly Popowski) of
Greenwood Lake, NY and daughter Elizabeth McCarthy (Paul) of Furlong, PA; grandsons Sean McCarthy of
Brooklyn, NY and Colin McCarthy of Philadelphia, PA; and Andrew's longtime partner, Bill Leonard of Boston, MA.
Marge was born November 29, 1931 in
Lynn, MA. to Verner and Florence (Nichols) Hopkins. Marge graduated from Lynn English High School and then attended Salem Hospital School of Nursing, becoming a registered nurse. Marge was proud of being a nurse her entire life, even keeping her nurse's cap in her bedside table until the day she passed. Marge became the Head Nurse of post-op at Salem Hospital and then worked at several other hospitals in the greater Boston area for many years.
Marge and Bob eventually settled in Andover where they raised their three children. They were engaged members of the community, involved with the Boy and Girl Scouts and local organizations working to end hunger and promote social justice. Active Episcopalians, they were faithful members of Christ Church, Andover, Trinity Church in Boston, and finally Church of the Redeemer in Chestnut Hill. An avid reader who liked to travel and cross-country ski, Marge also enjoyed music, especially classical and jazz. She and Bob were supporters of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and had season tickets for many years. Although less mobile in the past few years, Marge never missed an opportunity to dine out and cherished spending time with her family, especially at the holidays. Often unintentionally hilarious, Marge had a wry sense of humor that left those who knew her with a wealth of "Marge stories."
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Funeral Services at Christ Church, Andover, MA on Saturday, September 16 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations in Marge's memory can be made to the Greater Boston Food Bank, PO Box 55860, Boston, MA 02205 (https://www.gbfb.org/).
