Mark William Grant, Sr., 58, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, died unexpectedly on September 18, 2023. Born on December 29, 1964, Mark was a beloved son to Jean (Cowan) and the late William P. Grant; devoted husband to the late Sandra Marie (Spurr) Grant; devoted father to Mark Grant Jr., and his wife Sydney Cicero, and Brendan Grant; brother of Timothy Grant, and his husband, Todd Henricks, and the late Julia Catherine Grant. Brother-in law of Lynn Spurr and her partner Paul Casey and Nancy Spurr Mendez and her husband, Felix; beloved uncle to Haley Shine, Patrick Shine, and Sandra Mendez. Mark was the son-in-law of the late Eleanor (Healy) and William Spurr. And, Mark was a well known and loved and a mentor, coach, and friend to countless others.
Mark graduated from Morse Elementary School and from Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School, Class of 1982. He had a passion for Cambridge youth sports as a coach of basketball, softball, and baseball and closely mentored all in their athletic pursuits and always encouraged young people to reach their full potential.
Mark, nicknamed "MG," "Big Mark" and "Hammah", had an unmistakable Cambridge accent and was intensely proud of his Cambridge blue-collar roots. Mark was a regular at Riverside Bar and Grill where he would regale his good friends with tales of Cambridge past, inside jokes and friendly sports arguments. He was, naturally, biased to his favorite teams: the Patriots, Bruins, Celtics and Red Sox.
At the time of his passing, he worked for RICOH/Biogen. He also was a popular referee and umpire for local Cambridge sports teams.
Mark was always ready with a joke or a story and loved a good time. Once you became his friend, he was fiercely loyal and would do anything for you. Mark was devoted to his family and many friends, actively supporting their activities and accomplishments.
Visiting hours are Monday, September 25, 2023 from 4:00pm-8:00pm at Saint John's Church, located at 2254 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140.
A celebration of Mark's life will take place at a later date to be announced.

I worked with Mark at Digilab in Cambridge for many years. I normally got to work in the early mornings and the first person to greet me was usually Mark from the loading docks entrance. We talked about sports frequently; Mark was one of the nicest people I have ever met. I am deeply saddened by his passing. I will never forget the good times we had with Mark in the basement cave hangout in the bottom floor of 237 Putnam Ave and the great times at the corner bar formerly named Guertins, now Riverside Pizza. RIP my dear friend.
