Mark John Hollar Sr.
September 5, 1940 – September 20, 2023
Mark John Hollar Sr. passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2023. Born in Hickory, NC, on September 5, 1940, he was the youngest child of the late Alberta Stamey Hollar and Emory Robert Hollar Sr. Mark was an Eagle scout. He was a graduate of Western Carolina University and in the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. Mark received his master's degree from Appalachian State University. For most of his career, he was a Spanish instructor and Director of Admissions at Lenoir Community College.
During his retirement, Mark was a Mary's Kitchen volunteer, woodworker, gardener, traveler, and golfer, yet his true loves were his faith and his family. He was a long-time member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church and served the church in many capacities.
His large family includes wife Gilda; children, Mark Hollar Jr., Matthew Hollar (Alex), Lisa Alphin (Carlton), Lori Fulghum (Jabo), William Barnes (Terry), and stepson Charles Davis (Erin); grandchildren Ayla Hollar, Jacob Alphin (Kristen), Madison Upton (Rudy), Tyler Gray, April Wiggins (Jon), Stephen Mozingo, Ellie Davis, and Jack Davis; great-grandchildren Wade & Miles Alphin, Reagan and Anna Gray Upton, William Lee, Maylee and Natalee Wiggins.
Mark is also survived by his sisters Carolyn Deal (Jack) and Rachel Childress (Gene), sister-in-law Billie Sue Hollar, brother-in-law Craig Hardy (Leers), fourteen nieces and nephews, as well as colleagues, friends, and neighbors.
He was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife Jackie Hollar, son Michael Hollar, grandson John Alphin, brother Emory Hollar Jr., sisters June Starr (Marion and their son Charles) and Anne Lyerly (Mark).
A private family service will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church on Monday, September 25, 2023.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Mark's memory to Mary's Kitchen or St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 800 Rountree Street, Kinston NC 28501. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
