Mark W. Joy, MD, died on May 20, 2024 in Yakima, Washington, born September 14, 1959, to parents Walter Joy and Jody Lawrence in Riverside, California.

As the one boy out of 5 siblings he had to learn to navigate the feminine/masculine divide. Apparently he did so very effectively because his sisters absolutely adored him.

At the age of 10 the family moved to Riddle, Oregon, where he was introduced to the culture of small town, rural Oregon. Things like swimming in the river and sliding down waterfalls in the creek were a way of life for a kid there. While in Riddle High he met and bonded with a group of friends that he remained close to for the rest of his life. They were collectively known as ""the entourage.""

Mark graduated from Riddle High School in 1977. He went on to attend Southern Oregon State College, followed by Medical School at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. He completed his MD degree in 1993. In the midst of all this intense schooling he married Jennifer A. Pintok on December 28, 1985. He went on to complete a residency in Family Practice Medicine at Toledo Hospital in Ohio in years 1993-1996.
Mark worked in Ft. Gratiot, Michigan, for the next 10 years with a family practice medical group. In November 2006 Mark and Jennifer relocated to the Yakima area. Mark worked as a hospitalist at Yakima Regional Hospital until 2010. In that year he started the family practice medical clinic, Northwest Medicine, in which he would work until just a few weeks before his death.

Dr. Joy had over 4000 patients and was loved by them all and by his employees. He was an exceptional physician with a brilliant mind and a kind, compassionate spirit.

Mark loved golf, fantasy football, fine art, games, and especially reading. He was a voracious reader and took delight in recommending and sharing books with friends. He loved to travel with Jennifer.
He had a wonderful, quirky sense of humor with a deadpan delivery. He once told Jennifer that if she somehow was shrunk down to 5 inches tall she would have a very different relationship with her cats than with her dogs. His quirky, wry sense of humor was intact until virtually the very end as he told tales that confused the nurses.

Mark is survived by - his wife, Jennifer of 38 years, his 4 sisters - Donna Joy of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, Cathy Joy (Terry Egenhoff) of Missoula, Montana, Vicki Joy (Chris) of Dayton, Nevada, Jami Peters (Preston) of Winston, Oregon, and 14 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by - his Mother, Jody Wade, Father, Walter Joy, and Grandmother, Emma Gillette.

Dr. Mark Joy was an extraordinary human being. A unique and delightful man who was loved by virtually everyone he ever met.

I was led to Mark Joy as a primary care provider. We often spoke at my appointments of everything except my health. Friend to friend.

I was privileged to have Mark as my doctor for many years. He was a kind man and wonderful doctor. I was hopeful that he was on the road to recovery when I received the letter saying he was retiring. It is heartbreaking to hear that he has passed. I will miss him very much. My condolences to his family. :(

I first met Dr. Joy as our hospitalist and was impressed by his professional demeanor with patients. Dr. Joy became my personal physician when he assured me acceptcance with a looming medicare birthday. So, let's call that a good 10+ years ago!
He always took an extra minute to listen, ask questions. There was always a follow up visit or phone call. We enjoyed sharing travel and vacation stories and where the next adventure was planned.
A wonderful kind man and compassionate physician.
My sincere condolences.

Mark was clearly one of a kind , he was super smart , kind , never complained and had a great sense of humor , down to earth and never had an air about himself . So sorry to hear of his untimely death but what is amazing is even while he was on his deathbed he texted his friends that he was the luckiest man on earth . He was being hopeful that he would beat the illness but god had different plans . Our condolences to Jennifer and his extended family .

We were so sad to hear of Dr. Joy's passing. He was such a compassionate Doctor. He made you feel special when he came in the room. He didn't make you feel that he would have to hurry to see the next patient . Dr. Joy really listened to us and was very understanding to our concerns and always was there to answer them or send a referral to see another doctor that could help. There was a time when I went out of town. I was anxiously waiting for news of a report from another doctor. When the report came, Dr. Joy called me right away. I was so thankful for his phone call.
I will always remember him as our doctor. He was truly one of a kind.
I hope and pray that his wife and family members will find comfort, peace, and strength , knowing how special he was for us and much loved by so many.
Sincerely,
Liz and Joe Fear

Mark was my doctor. I learned of Mark when my wife saw him for an immigration exam. She came home telling me how impressed she was. So I decided to see for myself, and I came away equally impressed. Every visit to see him was a special experience. He was an excellent doctor who I trusted unequivocally. And he was a gem of a person. There are things I do in my daily routine for my health that I will do for the rest of my life, thanks to Mark. We will never forget him, and our hearts and prayers go out to his loved ones.

I'm so sorry to hear the passing of Mark. Mark and Jennifer along with Brent and Lisa were our dear friends in Port Huron, MI for many years. The 6 of us enjoyed good wine, good food, lots of laughs, bonfires but more importantly...a great friendship. Sending love and prayers to Jennifer at this sad time.

My son Jim enjoyed golfing with Mark, Brent and my now deceased husband John. They would go at least yearly with about 16 guys. These photos were shared with Jim today by Brent. May Mark rest in peace. I hope Mark and John are golfing together! Love, Carol Watson and family

Mark was a kind and thoughtful child. I was one of his cousin's. We had a time where we all lived together. And for all the crazy fun and loud times you could always find him reading and learning. I will carry a fond memory of him in out tree in the front yard kicked back on a limb reading. May you rest in peace. Love Vanessa.
